Schoellerbank is one of the leading private banks in Austria and a member of the HVB Group. It services demanding clients with asset management and insurance products as well as financial planning support. Austria’s largest online broker, the direktanlage.at, also originated at Schoellerbank. The infrastructure of the direktanlage.at is operated from Schoellerbank for historical reasons. Since customers are offered the latest services in the e-Banking sector, the demands placed on a new security infrastructure were high, particularly as these were also supposed to incorporate services such as stock price information (Reuters, Bloomberg) and the intranet information systems run by the HypoVereinsbank.

The direktanlage.at and Schoellerbank were to be separated to increase future flexibility and implement a powerful, scalable security structure. The requirements were high, with all external connections needing to be separated from internal networks by firewalls managed by several administrators with individual areas of responsibility and authorization. To ensure the permanent availability of services by Schoellerbank and direktanlage.at for customers, all components were designed to be highly available. The migration of the old system to the new one had to be implemented in just three hours, accompanied by a partial migration of the network from Token Ring to Ethernet.

Several redundant Barracuda NG Firewalls were deployed, managed from a multi-administrator capable management center. Within the timeframe, a network redesign with a new security structure was jointly developed by Barracuda and Schoellerbank, fulfilling all set objectives and implemented smoothly. The existing firewalls and several packet filter gateways were replaced within just three hours. The complexity of the task required deploying most special NG Firewall features, such as integrated DNS, load sharing for the web server farm, and more. Thanks to the excellent management tools (real-time visualization, real-time statistics, and integrated sniffer), the firewall has now also taken over a vital role in troubleshooting the brokerage systems. This has considerably improved both customer satisfaction and the availability and extensibility of the online brokerage platform. A special feature for direktanlage.at is that Barracuda also propagates the multi-cast based Xetra market price information system.

Smooth Transition to Energy Savings
The building was equipped with four end-of-life Trane water cooled chillers, located in the basement. Johnson Controls installed four York water cooled centrifugal chillers with unit mounted variable speed drives and a total installed cooling capacity of 6,8 MW. Each chiller has a capacity of 1,6 MW (variable to 1.9MW depending upon condenser water temperatures). Johnson Controls needed to design the equipment in such way that it would fit the dimensional constraints of the existing plant area and plant access route but also the specific performance requirements of the client. Morgan Stanley required the chiller plant to match the building load profile, turn down to match the low load requirement when needed and provide an improvement in the Energy Efficiency Ratio across the entire operating range. Other requirements were a reduction in the chiller noise level to improve the working environment in the plant room and a wide operating envelope coupled with intelligent controls to allow possible variation in both flow rate and temperature. The latter was needed to leverage increased capacity from a reduced number of machines during the different installation phases and allow future enhancement to a variable primary flow system.
