Fraport AG, with 2012 annual revenues of €2.44 billion, is among the leading international professional services organizations in the aviation industry. As the operator of the Frankfurt airport, Fraport is responsible for one of the most important hubs in international air transportation. In 2012, an average of 1,300 planes took off and landed every day, transporting a total of more than 57 million passengers. In addition, Fraport AG is active as a full-service provider in the field of airport management through investments and subsidiaries on four continents. More than 19,000 employees at Fraport AG ensure that all processes run smoothly.

Fraport AG, a leading international professional services organization in the aviation industry, operates more than 1,100 applications to support its employees. It was essential to maintain an overview and a working environment that’s as standardized as possible. Information relating to the processes and applications forms the foundation for the IT department’s work. Numerous business decisions are made based on it. For regulatory reasons, it is indispensable for fulfilling obligations to the works council and German data protection laws. Initially, the information was kept in an extensive Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet, but administering it centrally was taking more and more time. A comprehensive solution for process and application management had to be found.

Fraport selected Software AG’s solution based on the ARIS Architect, Publisher and IT Inventory. The project team first developed a metamodel with all the basic information that needed to be mapped. Fraport began by installing the ARIS repository and implementing ARIS Architect. The first milestone was reached very quickly: the Excel spreadsheet wasn’t needed anymore as all the information was available in the ARIS repository. The next step was to make the collected data available online to other authorized Fraport employees via ARIS Publisher. Decentralized maintenance posed the greatest challenge. This particular function was very important to the IT team to ensure up-to-date data. Querying the right parameters required a great many adjustments to the system. The Fraport team had handled the project largely on its own until this point, when it needed technical support from Software AG to customize IT Inventory.

The company has a long track record of innovative technology solutions. For example, 3M helps its customers optimize parking operations by automating fee collection and other processes. To improve support for this rapidly expanding segment, 3M needed to automate its own data collection and reporting. Jason Fox, Mobile Application Architect at 3M, upped the ante by volunteering to deliver the new app in one weekend. For Fox and his team, these requirements meant turning to the cloud instead of an on-premises datacenter. “My first thought was to go directly to the cloud because we needed to provide access not only to our salespeople, but to resellers who didn’t have access to our internal network,” says Fox. “The cloud just seemed like a logical choice.”
