The bank's IT infrastructure primarily uses a central Citrix XenApp environment, with most workstation PCs replaced by thin clients.

The central XenApp environment at Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) faced significant security challenges. The bank needed to protect its environment from unauthorized software execution, particularly against malware that could be embedded within email attachments, web browsers, or removable storage devices. Additionally, LBBW required a robust compliance and audit policy to ensure user and group-specific access requirements were met. The bank's IT organization needed a multi-level security solution that could prevent unauthorized software from running on its XenApp server farms, ensuring maximum system security and stability.

LBBW implemented the AppSense User Virtualization Platform to enhance its security architecture. This platform uses secure capture mechanisms at the kernel level to identify and block unwanted software applications on servers or terminals. It protects against script-based and executable viruses, trojans, and spyware. The AppSense solution also offers control over software content, such as ActiveX, VBScripts, batch files, Windows Installer packages, and configuration files for registration. The platform's comprehensive control functionality allows LBBW to define rules-based policies for application execution for individual groups or users. The solution logs all security-related events for auditing purposes and provides clear error messages to users when an application is blocked. Passive monitoring mode allows LBBW to observe user behavior before implementing new updates, ensuring that security configurations can be adapted accordingly.

Smooth Transition to Energy Savings
The building was equipped with four end-of-life Trane water cooled chillers, located in the basement. Johnson Controls installed four York water cooled centrifugal chillers with unit mounted variable speed drives and a total installed cooling capacity of 6,8 MW. Each chiller has a capacity of 1,6 MW (variable to 1.9MW depending upon condenser water temperatures). Johnson Controls needed to design the equipment in such way that it would fit the dimensional constraints of the existing plant area and plant access route but also the specific performance requirements of the client. Morgan Stanley required the chiller plant to match the building load profile, turn down to match the low load requirement when needed and provide an improvement in the Energy Efficiency Ratio across the entire operating range. Other requirements were a reduction in the chiller noise level to improve the working environment in the plant room and a wide operating envelope coupled with intelligent controls to allow possible variation in both flow rate and temperature. The latter was needed to leverage increased capacity from a reduced number of machines during the different installation phases and allow future enhancement to a variable primary flow system.

Derek Madison, Leader of Business Financial Support at MasterCard, oversees the validation of transactions and cash between two systems, whether they’re MasterCard owned or not.
