Crossroad Distributor Source Fishbowl Manufacturing Solution - Industrial IoT Case Study
Crossroad Distributor Source Fishbowl Manufacturing Solution
In 2008, Crossroad Distributor Source (CDS) realized that it was outgrowing QuickBooks as an inventory management solution. The company needed distribution centers in other cities, and QuickBooks as a standalone was not an option. Other issues were identified, such as customer- and volume-specific pricing models, key performance indicators, such as on-time delivery, fill rate, and traceability recordkeeping that had to be satisfied. Additionally, CDS had made a decision to bring in house all of its kit assembly, and needed a robust software package to address all these concerns. The biggest challenge was cost. Many of the accounting and inventory management software systems used in the industry were costly, often costing a minimum of $15,000 before you actually got what you wanted. At this point in the young company’s history, that sort of expenditure was impractical.

Quality Pet Products Saves 16 Operational Hours Per Day, Receives Certification, and Replaces Multiple Apps with Fishbowl Manufacturing - Industrial IoT Case Study
Quality Pet Products Saves 16 Operational Hours Per Day, Receives Certification, and Replaces Multiple Apps with Fishbowl Manufacturing
Quality Pet Products, a wholesale distributor of pet foods, faced a fourfold business challenge. They needed to cut operations time and expense, develop processes and procedures to become AIB certified, streamline multiple warehouse/inventory software packages, and create a Web-based order entry system. They wanted to achieve all these while staying on the Intuit® QuickBooks® accounting solution. The company needed software that would streamline its warehouse processes and keep track of bin or picking locations, create bills of lading, calculate weight, and handle date codes, serial numbers and other inventory management items. They also needed to make their warehouse AIB certified as a top manufacturing partner required them to have the certification. Integrated Fishbowl® Solution Delivers Competitive Inventory Control for Wholesale Medical Supply Distributor, Trimex Medical®
Trimex Medical, a wholesale medical, dental, and hospital supplies distributor, was facing challenges due to its large volume of operations. The company was at a crossroads, needing an effective inventory management system to sustain their competitive position and increase output. The medical supplies industry required allocation of inventory dispersed into many non-traditional stock locales, including consigned inventory, leased inventory, and inventory sold with RMA tracking detail. Additionally, much of the product maintains lot and serial tracking codes. Product liability was detrimental to the success of the company. Knowing exactly what they have and where they have it was fundamental to Trimex’s business model. They needed a solution that was priced at a fraction of an in-house-built solution cost and that wouldn't require them to abandon the familiar QuickBooks accounting software.

Wholesale Boutique Speeds Up Nationwide Order Management System with Fishbowl Warehouse
In 2009, Wholesale Boutique decided to move the bulk of their business online, launching their website www.wholesaleboutique.com. This decision introduced a new layer of complexity to their operations, as they could no longer handle the increased order volume using QuickBooks as their only application. During their peak season, they spent up to two hours just getting the orders out of QuickBooks Enterprise to process them. Their Shipping Department was nearly unmanageable because of the fact that QuickBooks had limited integration with UPS. They had to manually enter drop ship orders and other shipping information. The company needed to drastically change the way they processed orders if they wanted to keep up with all of their new business. They set out to find an order management system that would integrate with both QuickBooks Enterprise and the company’s eCommerce platform.

The Mending Shed, an online store selling a wide variety of replacement parts, was struggling with its inventory management system. The company was constantly dealing with overages and shortages on inventory, leading to customer dissatisfaction when orders had to be put on back order. The lack of inventory tracking also resulted in misplaced items, leading to a significant amount of unrecoverable inventory. The company was spending more than six hours per day to create purchase orders for all of their vendors. The process of picking each order individually was time-consuming and inefficient, taking two hours per every 100 orders picked. Employees had to memorize where each item was stored in the warehouse, leading to long training periods before they became proficient in picking and processing orders.

Fishbowl Tracks All Materials Used in Procedures, and It Lets Every Practitioner Know How Many Supplies Are at Each Location
Endodontic & Periodontic Associates, a large multi-specialty dental practice, was facing challenges in tracking and managing their inventory. They were not tracking their inventory on a usage basis, either by patient or by office. This lack of information made it difficult for doctors to know if they were being efficient with their supplies and what they should do to increase their efficiency. The office staff would visually check their inventory levels at the end of each month and then order however much they needed to bring inventory back up to the desired levels. But the actual levels were frequently guessed at, which often resulted in higher-than-necessary inventory or even stockouts at each office. Sometimes they would even run out of items required to perform procedures efficiently. Those procedures would have to be postponed and the missing materials had to be rush-ordered at great expense. But the amount of that added expense was difficult to determine without accurate inventory tracking information.

Meander Medical Centre, an award-winning healthcare institution in the Netherlands, moved into a new facility in 2013. The new facility was designed with a state-of-the-art information communications technology (ICT) infrastructure. The hospital's IT team needed to provide secure access to the hospital's IT network for its extensive medical equipment and application suppliers. These suppliers needed access to maintain and support their solutions and track and report on results. The hospital had approximately 80 suppliers who needed access to their network, making it critical to provide access in a way that complies with government regulations concerning healthcare information security. Setting up virtual private network (VPN) connections for each of the suppliers was an unattractive option due to the high skill level required, the maintenance costs, and the inability to audit what was happening during remote sessions.

Michigan Knights of Columbus: Supporting a Nonprofit’s Large Statewide Membership and Network
The Michigan State Council of the Knights of Columbus, a statewide fraternal organization affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, was facing challenges in administering a statewide email system to facilitate communication throughout the organization. The Council provides remote support to approximately 2,000 state directors, local Grand Knights, and other local officers using the email system. However, the varying technology skill levels of the members and the geographical spread across the state of Michigan made it difficult to provide in-person support to everyone. The State Technology Support Director was spending a lot of time on the telephone trying to walk members through setting up their email and sometimes just helping them log into the system itself. The inability to see their computer screen or know whether they were following directions correctly made the troubleshooting process very aggravating for both parties. As a result, they decided they needed a remote support solution to better serve their members.

FFVA Mutual Insurance Company Achieves HIPAA Compliance
When Michael Romious joined FFVA Mutual five years ago as senior network systems administrator, users could bring in USB drives from home, install whatever they wanted including games, and otherwise modify their workstations. The consequence was that IT spent considerable time dealing with corrupted operating systems and had substantial expenses replacing machines. Rebuilding systems took “a lot of effort” according to Romious, and inevitably users had files in additional unexpected places, requiring manual efforts to retrieve those files. Users were down for a day or more. These incidents took time away from priority IT initiatives and required 3-24 hours each to identify the issue, mitigate and remediate. Educating users was helpful, but users still couldn’t manage themselves, particularly given increasingly sophisticated social engineering exploits.

General Communications, Inc. (GCI) is a premier integrated telecommunication provider that has grown significantly over the years. As the number of users grew from less than 500 to over 2,600, compliance and monitoring user access became a priority. The company had large teams of administrators with generic user accounts, which made it difficult for IT management to tie a specific change to an individual user. Motivated by Sarbanes-Oxley, GCI’s IT team set out to improve their security posture through management of users, privileges and access to servers, applications and data. New requirements, specifically the SOX Section 404’s Internal Controls Report, came with threats of $1 million dollar fines if companies were found non-compliant. The IT Security Management team took control of root admins and established preemptive guidelines for what junior and senior admins could access. They quickly realized they needed a solution that could deliver a scalable method for managing user access while offering traceability and verification at a granular level.

Columbia Bank Achieves Compliance by Gaining Visibility into Active Directory Changes
Columbia Bank, a rapidly growing Pacific Northwest Community Bank, was facing challenges in managing and tracking changes to Active Directory to ensure compliance. As the bank grew organically and through acquisition, so did its infrastructure. With an increased number of administrators and users, privileged access quickly became complicated and difficult to govern. Any changes made to one area had a ripple effect, making it increasingly difficult for IT leadership to ensure compliance as IT scaled to adapt to the organization’s growth. The Microsoft tools they used for auditing did not provide enough visibility into changes or the source, making it difficult for the IT department to pinpoint and resolve issues. Furthermore, a lack of clear reporting showing the “who, what, where, when and why” of changes posed a risk to compliance.

Region 14 Education Service Center, which provides IT support and training services to 42 school districts, was facing a challenge. With just 11 support staff, they had to serve over 160 campus sites, 200 administrators, 4,000 teachers, and 43,000 students dispersed over hundreds of square miles. The team only had one network administrator to serve the service center and its staff. As educational funding continues to decrease, most schools have few dedicated IT technicians on site. Technicians at the individual school level are typically teachers or aides who have been asked to wear an extra hat and often have little IT training. Prior to Bomgar, the Region 14 support team had minimal remote control capabilities. Whether it was an urgent server incident or a routine email support issue, support staff usually had to drive to each client site for most issues.
