About The Customer
Set up in 1959 as Lincolnshire Packaging, LINPAC has grown and evolved into a global company with offices in 29 countries and over 7,000 staff worldwide. Always eager to look for ways of maximising efficiency and minimising costs whilst maintaining customer service levels, LINPAC first approached 3T in 2005 with the brief of optimising their UK distribution operations.
The Challenge
LINPAC had realised that to maintain and grow their market share and increase profitability, fundamental changes needed to be made to their transport management. Their operation included two main distribution centres, a dedicated vehicle fleet and five satellite depots in the UK, all with their own staff, stock and vehicles. Although able to provide a high level of service, systems weren’t always efficient or flexible, with equipment quite often in the wrong place to react quickly to client needs.
The Solution
3T began to streamline the process through centralisation of stock by withdrawing from LINPAC’s satellite sites and by outsourcing the in-house fleet to carefully selected, high-quality, shared user carriers. This significantly reduced logistics operating costs for LINPAC UK. 3T also established a new nationwide delivery network with their carrier partners that allowed goods in the UK to be delivered on a next-day basis. This ensured service levels were enhanced through a flexible outsourced transport solution. In addition, 3T worked with LINPAC to implement a range of processes which included optimal transport diaries, advice on minimum order quantities, visual interfaces of upcoming loads and their present status, enabling better despatch planning, a parts database to enhance vehicle utilisation, and order tracking by status up to delivery. 3T now manage all domestic customer deliveries, ex works, export delivery and inter-site trunking between the two distribution centres.
Operational Impact
  • LINPAC’s management is delighted with the impact that the 3T solution has had upon their transport operations and the two companies have built up a positive long-term working relationship.
  • LINPAC has been so pleased by the results of their collaboration with 3T that they have continued to work together to refine and improve transport management, expanding their relationship with 3T into operations in France and Spain.
  • 3T has developed its transport excellence programme for LINPAC Packaging. Through a suite of KPIs that are measured against and reported on a daily basis, 3T ensures that OTIF delivery service levels in excess of 99.5% are maintained.
  • This transport excellence programme has become part of LINPAC’s European best practice approach to transport management which has been rolled out to other LINPAC operations, setting the standard for continuous improvement in transport operations.
  • 3T has worked with LINPAC to calculate emissions via government formulas, using this data to implement structures that have significantly reduced the company’s transportation carbon dioxide emissions – by up to a third in some cases.
Quantitative Benefit
  • LINPAC’s OTIF delivery service levels in excess of 99.5% are maintained.
  • LINPAC’s transportation carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by up to a third.
