About The Customer
Griffin Transportation, based in Grand Rapids, MI, is a full-service ground transportation company that provides dedicated truckload and logistics services. The company operates 75 tractors and 200 trailers, partnering with additional carriers to deliver freight nationwide. Griffin relies on an Internet-based load matching system to pair drivers with freight and uses federally mandated electronic logging devices (ELD) to monitor and record data about trucks and drivers. The company places a high value on Internet connectivity, as any downtime can result in significant financial losses and operational inefficiencies.
The Challenge
Griffin Transportation faced significant challenges due to outdated phone, network, and Internet infrastructure. The company relies heavily on Internet connectivity for its operations, including an Internet-based load matching system and federally mandated electronic logging devices (ELD). Any loss of connectivity could result in substantial financial losses, as much as $100,000 per hour. The outdated infrastructure led to frequent connectivity issues, causing drivers to sit idle and resulting in lost productivity. Additionally, the old phone system was unreliable, further complicating communication and operational efficiency.
The Solution
IT Partners, a Grand Rapids-based Datto Partner, was brought in to update Griffin's infrastructure. They conducted an assessment of Griffin's network, identifying vulnerabilities and opportunities for productivity improvements. The solution involved updating Griffin's LAN with Datto Switches and installing Datto Access Points throughout the campus, including outdoor areas. Redundant Internet connections were set up using Fiber and Comcast, along with two Datto Networking Appliances for 4G LTE failover. Additionally, IT Partners upgraded Griffin's 14-year-old phone system to a modern VoIP system, ensuring reliable communication. The new infrastructure provided Griffin with highly available network and Internet connectivity, essential for their operations.
Operational Impact
  • Griffin Transportation now enjoys highly available network and Internet connectivity, reducing the risk of downtime and its associated financial losses.
  • The new VoIP phone system has improved communication reliability and user-friendliness, enhancing overall operational efficiency.
  • Drivers can access the Internet from Griffin's lot while waiting for freight overnight, thanks to the outdoor Datto Access Points.
  • The redundant Internet connections and 4G LTE failover ensure continuous Internet access, even if both primary ISPs go down.
  • The updated infrastructure has given Griffin a competitive edge, allowing them to pick jobs while competitors may be experiencing outages.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Griffin Transportation can lose as much as $100,000 an hour if they don't have connectivity.
  • The company operates 75 tractors and 200 trailers, highlighting the scale of their operations and the importance of reliable connectivity.
