About The Customer
Caterpillar Inc. is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines. The company is a leader in its respective technologies, which are employed in various industries such as construction, transportation, mining, forestry, energy, logistics, and electric power generation. Caterpillar is also committed to ensuring worker safety, which led to the implementation of a comprehensive Enhanced 911 (E911) system at its facilities. The company’s headquarters are located in Peoria, Illinois, and it operates numerous properties across the United States.
The Challenge
Caterpillar embarked on a multi-year, multi-location project to implement a world-class Enhanced 911 (E911) system at its facilities in Peoria, Illinois. The company aimed to improve emergency response times and collect more real-time occupancy data. The challenge was to integrate various systems and applications to ensure accurate and efficient emergency response and occupancy monitoring. The project had to comply with federal, state, and local requirements, including OSHA, ADA, and state-mandated E911 laws.
The Solution
Caterpillar integrated ARCHIBUS with its Cisco VOIP software and personnel data from its Global Directory System to improve emergency response times. The E911 system automatically associates the caller’s telephone number with a physical location within a building and routes this information to Caterpillar security, who then supply it to first responders. The initial project covered 26 buildings in Peoria, with subsequent phases extending the system to 140 properties in 18 states. ARCHIBUS is connected to AutoCAD drawings via the Overlay application to visualize spatial relations among individuals, groups, and zones within Caterpillar buildings. The system also integrates with the Cisco Unified IP Phone System, Cisco Emergency Responder (CER) System, and Cisco Call Manager. The ARCHIBUS database updates all employee and location information daily, helping managers determine the best allocation of space.
Operational Impact
  • The E911 system provides greater speed and accuracy in responding to emergency calls by company security and first responders.
  • The integration of ARCHIBUS and Cisco VOIP ensures that occupancy data is kept current, even when employees move to new locations.
  • The system helps managers determine the best allocation of space under their control.
  • The project required effective communication with various teams, including LAN, Voice, Security, Facility, and local HR teams, to ensure its success.
  • Future enhancements are being considered, such as Single Sign-On (SSO), guest accounts, emergency zone leaders, self-service occupancy error reporting, and other reporting capabilities.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The initial E911 project covered 26 buildings comprising 24 million square feet.
  • The second phase extended the system to 14 additional properties, totaling 76 million square feet.
  • The third phase will bring the system to more than 140 properties in 18 states.
