About The Customer
Arup is a global firm comprised of more than 14,000 specialists, working across 90-plus disciplines in more than 34 countries. In the global territory “Australasia,” Arup features a diverse group of practitioners across a wide variety of skill sets and professions across 12 offices, who serve projects all around Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Arup’s first project in Sydney was the Sydney Opera House, which brought them to Australia in the first place. Beyond being globally recognized for its design and structural aesthetics, the project exemplifies Arup’s commitment to digital design as it was one of the first ever projects that was modeled using computers for the sail structures.
The Challenge
Arup, a global firm of over 14,000 specialists working across 90-plus disciplines in more than 34 countries, was facing issues in the quality and accuracy of drawings and the consistency of manual document markups for design review. The lack of standard markups within manual review processes kept stakeholders occupied with document management as opposed to adding value to projects by focusing on design and execution. Review timeframes were also bloated due to the reliance on email for the heavy project collaboration, as some projects involved stakeholders working in remote offices across the globe. Certain projects also yielded issues for Arup when it came to the quality of as-built drawings and scans.
The Solution
Arup implemented Bluebeam® Revu®, the project efficiency and collaboration solution trusted by over 1.3 million AEC professionals worldwide, to improve project communication and streamline processes. By utilizing PDF, Revu enables a common data environment for owners, architects, engineers and contractors to easily share jobsite information downstream, including 3D models and images. The firm also began to collaborate on PDF documentation within the digital space using Bluebeam Studio Sessions, a workflow within Revu that allows real-time collaboration. The powerful PDF capabilities of Revu solved many of the quality issues with as-built drawings and scans, and also began to positively impact the other aspects of the design review process as well.
Operational Impact
  • The industry specific tools within Bluebeam Revu and Studio have allowed Arup to cut design review times by as much as 60% while maintaining quality.
  • Revu has allowed Arup to minimize risk by using previously unusable as-built drawings and converting them into scalable, accurate and efficiently marked-up digital PDFs suitable for client deliverables.
  • The power of digital PDFs within Revu has allowed Arup to move toward being a paperless office, showing a significant savings in paper-based costs and tools.
  • Bluebeam Studio has allowed the globally savvy firm to involve technical experts from offices around the world to collaborate on projects, providing value to clients.
  • The mobile capabilities of Revu and Studio keep employees engaged in activity-based working, as opposed to spending time in administrative or document search capacities.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Cut design review times by as much as 60%
  • Significant savings in paper-based costs
