At least 81% of healthcare or health insurance companies have seen a data breach. In 2015, Anthem, a large insurer, was hacked and patient data for nearly 80 million Americans were exposed. Nick Schmidt runs the IT department for Clean Teeth and was tasked with finding a high-quality security solution to prevent data breaches and keep client information secure.

They were particularly concerned about securing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and staying HIPAA compliant. The company holds a vast amount of PII, including Social Security numbers, job information, and medical records, making it a target for hackers. The company was experiencing common malware and phishing attacks, and data leaks were a significant concern. Nick Schmidt, who runs the IT department for Clean Teeth, was tasked with finding a high-quality security solution to prevent data breaches and keep client information secure. He tried several products, from traditional security like Secure Email Gateways to more modern, API-based solutions, but none met his needs.

Nick Schmidt discovered Avanan, a security solution that utilizes Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and has a powerful DLP engine. Avanan can identify and mark files containing confidential information like Social Security numbers, bank routing numbers, and more. It can also identify images in files and scanned documents. By using advanced data classification, document fingerprinting, and OCR to identify ePHI in files and email, Avanan can easily deploy policy-based encryption, using role-based, context-aware policies to ensure data security. Avanan's patented technology scans inbound, outbound, and internal email—after default security, but before it reaches the inbox. This approach not only blocks phishing, malware, data loss, and insider threats, but it also allows the platform to take action before malicious content reaches the end-user and before sensitive data leaks.

However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals.
