Daventry District Council is a local government authority in the United Kingdom, part of the Northamptonshire Waste Partnership (NWP). The NWP includes Northamptonshire County Council and seven district and borough councils, working together to achieve the Northamptonshire Joint Waste Management Strategy. Daventry District Council volunteered as the project manager for a county-wide program aimed at optimizing waste collection and recycling services. The council has been experiencing steady population growth, with an additional 20,000 inhabitants expected over the next 10 years. The council's efforts are part of a broader initiative to meet the European Union Waste Management Directive and improve the efficiency of waste management services.

Under the European Union Waste Management Directive, by 2010 the UK was required to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill to 75% of that produced in 1995. Waste management is the third largest area of local government expenditure after construction and adult social care, prompting councils to improve the efficiency of waste collection services. Additionally, strong housing and population growth in areas like Northamptonshire has resulted in significant additional demand for services. The Northamptonshire Waste Partnership (NWP) aimed to address these challenges by optimizing waste collection routes and improving existing recycling services.
解决方案
The project, managed by White Young Green, was divided into four stages: generating new waste collection routes, investigating cross-border working benefits, evaluating joint working opportunities, and assessing county-wide working potential. Integrated Skills, a specialist in environmental advisory and management services, was contracted to optimize refuse collection routing using RouteSmart and OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) Layer with Road Routing Information (RRI). The solution involved creating new waste collection routes, reducing the number of routes, and optimizing vehicle and resource usage. The ITN Layer provided detailed road routing and drive information, including width, height, and weight restrictions, which were crucial for accurate route planning.

Buoy Status Monitoring with LoRa
The Netherlands are well-known for their inland waterways, canals, sluices and of course port activities. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure indicates that there are thousands of buoys and fixed items in and near water environments that would profit from IoT monitoring. One of the problems with buoys for example, is that they get hit by ships and the anchor cable breaks. Without connectivity, it takes quite some time to find out that something has happened with that buoy. Not to mention the costs of renting a boat to go to the buoy to fix it. Another important issue, is that there is no real-time monitoring of the buoys at this moment. Only by physically visiting the object on the water, one gains insight in its status.
