About The Customer
The customer in this case study is a large ice cream manufacturer based in Sri Lanka. The company has a significant logistical operation, with routes that are quite lengthy (about 250 km). The company was facing significant losses due to the melting and spoiling of their product during transportation. The tropical climate of Sri Lanka, with temperatures reaching almost 35°С, was a major challenge for the company. Additionally, the practice of drivers switching off the refrigerators to save fuel was further contributing to the problem.
The Challenge
Ice cream manufacturers in Sri Lanka were facing a significant challenge in transporting their perishable product due to the tropical climate of the island. The temperature inside the containers often reached almost 35°С, causing the ice cream to melt and spoil. Additionally, drivers would often switch off the refrigerators to save fuel, exacerbating the problem. This situation led to substantial losses for both the shippers and receivers of the ice cream.
The Solution
Kloudip, a telematics service provider from Sri Lanka, implemented the Wialon tracking system in the workflow of the ice cream manufacturer. The solution involved the use of GPS trackers, Queclink temperature sensors, and the Sensolator application. The GPS trackers were installed in all the units and were used to send and receive telematics data, monitor speed, and the location of objects. The Queclink temperature sensors were used to control the temperature inside the containers. The Sensolator application was used for visual control of the temperature data received from the containers. If the temperature rose, the operator would instantly receive a notification from the application.
Operational Impact
  • Wialon now controls more than 50 of the company's reefer containers.
  • The implementation of the system has helped the company save money and increase revenue.
  • The use of the Sensolator application for visual control of temperature data has improved operational efficiency and reduced the risk of product spoilage.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The ice cream manufacturer achieved 60% savings compared to the previous year by not having to take in the returned melted ice cream.
  • The company saved over 35% on their labor and cargo transportation costs as their staff didn’t have to take in the melted ice cream and ship substitutes of the goods.
