About The Customer
Established in 1932, J.J. Richards & Sons Pty Ltd is an Australian-owned and operated family business that provides waste management services across Australia. The company is known for its commitment to safety, reliability, and excellence in customer service. Serving 63 local authorities and collecting almost 2.5 million wheelie bins weekly, J.J. Richards is a prominent name in the waste management industry. With nearly 90 years of experience, the company offers comprehensive waste management solutions and was seeking a digital transformation to enhance its services and operational efficiency.
The Challenge
J.J Richards, a leading Australian waste management company, faced significant challenges with their legacy systems, which were built on outdated Windows DOS architecture. These systems were not easily accessible, lacked integration, and were unable to support modern, responsive applications. The IT team, primarily skilled in .NET, struggled to build new applications rapidly. Additionally, the company lacked multi-channel mobility solutions and had an unmanageable supplier management system reliant on Microsoft Excel. The need for a digital overhaul was urgent to meet the demands of tech-savvy customers and streamline internal processes.
The Solution
J.J. Richards partnered with WaveMaker, a low-code platform, to modernize their applications rapidly and cost-effectively. The IT team used WaveMaker to build new applications and modernize existing ones, integrating them with the existing database schema through REST APIs. The platform's developer-centric capabilities allowed the team to create visually appealing UIs using simple drag-and-drop features, replacing legacy applications with multi-channel, high-fidelity user interfaces. WaveMaker's support and training helped the IT team lower the learning curve, enabling them to build applications for mobile, web services, and in-truck devices. The commercial model of WaveMaker was also cost-effective, ensuring continued engagement and scalability.

Water pumping, treatment and conveyance are among the largest energy and cost outlays for many local and regional municipalities. Electricity time-of-use rates and peak pricing tariffs are driving those costs even higher. This case study describes how Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency (MRWPCA) implemented a process data monitoring and control solution in order to analyze and optimize energy use, reduce deployment costs and save operational expenses.

A SMART SOLUTION FOR A CIRCULAR ECONOMY
A detailed study conducted by a student from Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICAI in Spain highlighted the need for ecologically safe and sustainable products. While recycling plays an important role in the circular economy, many consumers don’t recycle for a variety of reasons, including lack of space, inconveniently located recycling centers and collection containers, or distrust and/or disbelief in the recycling process. Organizations needed a model that made recycling easier and more accessible for everyone.
