About The Customer
Sunset Transportation is a third-party logistics (3PL) company based in St. Louis, Missouri. The company offers logistics management and brokerage services to midmarket organizations throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Sunset helps clients manage shipping, freight audit, and payment processes. What sets the company apart from other 3PL providers is its ability to efficiently move not just goods, but also the data associated with each shipment. The company's new WebFOCUS portal, live in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud, combines order data, in-transit tracking information, and shipping metrics into a self-service environment that empowers clients to understand their full transportation history and make real-time decisions to keep shipping costs down.
The Challenge
Sunset Transportation, a logistics management and brokerage services company, was facing a challenge with its existing Tableau environment. The platform lacked the enterprise capabilities needed to elevate their analytics to the next level. The company needed a robust analytics platform that could be embedded into a larger application to provide a holistic client experience. They wanted to leverage a lot of internal and external data, and the existing BI platform was not capable of scaling to meet these needs. Sunset also wanted to deploy the new software in a cloud environment to reduce infrastructure costs and increase scalability.
The Solution
Sunset Transportation partnered with Information Builders to create a new portal, data warehouse, and ETL procedures. They deployed the new software in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. The new cloud environment empowers clients to negotiate cost-effective contracts, monitor shipments, and select the best carriers for each engagement. Sunset created a customer-facing portal called LOGIK that recently launched with two dashboards: Shipment Metrics and Live In-Transit. The Shipment Metrics dashboard displays financial metrics, such as spending and volume by shipment mode. Clients can visualize real-time shipping activity, monitor origin and destination density, and review historical metrics to determine the most cost-effective lanes. The Live In-Transit dashboard plots shipment data on an interactive map, enabling customers to monitor shipments from origin to destination.

Remote Temperature Monitoring of Perishable Goods Saves Money
RMONI was facing temperature monitoring challenges in a cold chain business. A cold chain must be established and maintained to ensure goods have been properly refrigerated during every step of the process, making temperature monitoring a critical business function. Manual registration practice can be very costly, labor intensive and prone to mistakes.

IoT-based Fleet Intelligence Innovation
Speed to market is precious for DRVR, a rapidly growing start-up company. With a business model dependent on reliable mobile data, managers were spending their lives trying to negotiate data roaming deals with mobile network operators in different countries. And, even then, service quality was a constant concern.

Vehicle Fleet Analytics
Organizations frequently implement a maintenance strategy for their fleets of vehicles using a combination of time and usage based maintenance schedules. While effective as a whole, time and usage based schedules do not take into account driving patterns, environmental factors, and sensors currently deployed within the vehicle measuring crank voltage, ignition voltage, and acceleration, all of which have a significant influence on the overall health of the vehicle. In a typical fleet, a large percentage of road calls are related to electrical failure, with battery failure being a common cause. Battery failures result in unmet service agreement levels and costly re-adjustment of scheduled to provide replacement vehicles. To reduce the impact of unplanned maintenance, the transportation logistics company was interested in a trial of C3 Vehicle Fleet Analytics.
