About The Customer
Tantalus is a company that provides Smart Grid communications technology. Their technology enables electric, gas, and water utilities to optimize their resources by automating monitoring and control processes, improving operational efficiency, and delivering the information utilities and consumers need to manage energy intelligently and cost-effectively. Scott McKenzie, the VP of Load Management Operations at Tantalus, is responsible for managing two key aspects of the business; RMA (Return Material Authorization) and providing support for load management products. Tantalus has roughly 150 employees, with the majority based in their headquarters in Vancouver and a 20-person office in Ottawa.
The Challenge
Tantalus, a provider of Smart Grid communications technology, was facing a significant challenge in managing and reporting data. Scott McKenzie, the VP of Load Management Operations, was responsible for tracking, analyzing, and reporting on data from various sources nested in Jira. The data focused on product shipments, returns, and support tickets. The process involved exporting Jira data onto an Excel spreadsheet, manipulating the data, creating custom graphs, and then incorporating these into reports for monthly senior management meetings. This process was not only repetitive but also time-consuming. Jira housed a large amount of granular data, and Scott only needed to look at a few major silos of data. Every month, he would download large spreadsheets with thousands of lines of data and begin analyzing. It would typically take days to build one monthly report. This manual and labor-intensive process was in dire need of an overhaul.
The Solution
Scott learned about Klipfolio, a dashboard reporting tool, and decided to use it to streamline Tantalus’ reporting. The new strategy focused on three key load management operations metrics: Returns, Product Quality, and Customer Data. With Klipfolio, Scott only needed to export a couple of spreadsheets once a month and connect them to Klipfolio. The tool impacted more than just Scott’s executive reporting. Other teams in the company also started using Klipfolio to monitor their unique team metrics. Scott shared his reports with the Senior executive review team, R&D, and manufacturing teams at Tantalus. The reports were accessible from anywhere at any time, improving visibility and transparency.
