About The Customer
DP World is the third largest port operator globally, handling around 10% of the world's container trade. Their terminal in Southampton is one of the largest in the UK and a Lloyd’s List award winner. DP World is committed to increasing the port’s productivity, reducing operational costs, and maximizing the return on their investments in larger cranes, deeper berths, and an expanded fleet of terminal vehicles.
The Challenge
DP World Southampton, one of the largest ports in the UK, aimed to maintain its position as the UK's most productive port. The port needed to maximize the return on investment by increasing the flow of goods through the terminal, reduce costs, and use connectivity to boost operational efficiency. Additionally, they required a rugged device suitable for the harsh work environment, real-time tracking and visibility of assets, and a customized and easy-to-use navigation system.
The Solution
The solution involved deploying Honeywell’s Thor VM3, a vehicle-mounted mobile computer designed for tough freight operations. The Thor VM3 features a remote turn-on capability, allowing drivers to start their tasks immediately upon entering the cab. The device is Microsoft Windows-based, simplifying integration and application development. DP World Southampton upgraded from previous Honeywell models to the Thor VM3 to leverage the Windows 7 platform. Renovotec, a leading supplier in the UK sector, provided technical support and service, enabling smooth and efficient port operations through a network of vehicle-mounted devices with tracking and inventory-scanning software.
Operational Impact
  • The Honeywell connected solution helps DP World Southampton maximize its ROI and maintain its position among the UK’s most productive ports.
  • The Thor VM3 allows DP World to increase the flow of goods through their Southampton port, enabling the terminal’s 84 Straddle Carriers and 8 Empty Container Handlers to operate at maximum efficiency.
  • The touch screen and customized navigation system make the mobile computer easy to use for drivers, providing real-time visibility of assets through GPS tracking and links to the Straddle Carrier PLC.
  • The remote turn-on feature allows Straddle drivers to become productive from the minute they sit in the cab, and the rugged design ensures the device's stability in harsh operating environments.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The terminal moves over 20,000 containers daily.
  • The terminal loads over 2,000 lorries and 15 rail freights each day.
