About The Customer
Royal Jordanian Airlines is the flag carrier of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, operating scheduled and non-scheduled domestic and international services over four continents. Based at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Royal Jordanian belongs to the Arab Air Carriers Organization and the global airline alliance Oneworld. The airline is a past winner of the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation award for Airline Turnaround of the Year and the Airline of the Year from the industry publication Airfinance Journal. It operates more than 500 flights a week, employs 4,545 people, and earned US$1.036 billion in revenue in 2011.
The Challenge
Royal Jordanian Airlines, the flag carrier of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, was struggling to manage the increasing volumes of big data in its Oracle system. The airline needed a better understanding of the business, which required detailed data on many aspects of operations, including fuel consumption, cabin and cockpit functions, mail and courier traffic, and catering costs. The airline relied heavily on Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for business discovery, but pulling data from disparate sources was time-consuming and required dedicated IT resources. It took the airline almost a month to aggregate data for a static report and then process the data. Given the highly competitive nature of the aviation industry, Royal Jordanian required a cost-effective business discovery platform that was sensitive to changes in market conditions.
The Solution
Royal Jordanian Airlines deployed QlikView for 16 licensed users and also has 21 personal editions of the business discovery software. The airline evaluated a number of business intelligence reporting solutions, including one from Microsoft, but found them to be overly complex and not user friendly. Then, in March 2011, Jordan QlikTech Partner Synapse Technologies introduced QlikView business discovery to Royal Jordanian. It organized several Seeing is Believing - proof of concept - demonstrations of QlikView with the IT department at Royal Jordanian. The demonstrations were an instant success. For a proof of concept, Royal Jordanian chose a business-critical analytical requirement for any airline—route profitability reporting. Synapse Technologies delivered the results Royal Jordanian wanted with the proof of concept.
