About The Customer
The Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) is a membership-based community development corporation dedicated to resident empowerment and sustainable community revitalization for current and future residents of Lowell and the Merrimack Valley. CBA focuses on addressing barriers to employment, such as reliable and affordable transportation, to support the economic and social well-being of the community. By partnering with local businesses and organizations, CBA aims to create self-sustaining programs that provide training, employment opportunities, and community support. Their Supported Training Education Program (STEP) is one such initiative that helps residents gain employment in manufacturing facilities in and around the Greater Lowell Area.
The Challenge
The Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) faced a significant challenge in providing reliable and affordable transportation for participants in their Supported Training Education Program (STEP). The lack of direct public transportation between Lowell and Devens, a distance of 30 miles, created a barrier for many participants. The commute could take over two hours one way, making it difficult for employees to work long hours and affecting employee retention. This situation necessitated a solution that could offer efficient and reliable transportation to support the employment and training needs of the community.
The Solution
To address the transportation challenge, CBA partnered with HBSS to implement the QRyde Community Based Transportation model. This software solution allowed CBA to easily book and manage rides for their students through various third-party transportation providers. QRyde facilitated the management of rides, payment distribution, and scheduling, making the transportation process more efficient and reliable. The implementation of QRyde's solution significantly reduced commute times, which were previously over two hours one way via public transit. The new system provided shuttle services between Lowell and Devens, with outbound shuttles running at 6:00 am and 6:00 pm, and reverse commute shuttles at 7:00 am and 7:00 pm, seven days a week. This improvement in transportation logistics made it easier for employees to work long hours and noticeably improved employee retention.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of QRyde's Community Based Transportation model allowed CBA to efficiently manage rides and payments for their students, streamlining the transportation process.
  • The reduction in commute times from over two hours one way to a more manageable duration made it easier for employees to work long hours, enhancing their job satisfaction and retention.
  • The reliable and efficient transportation solution added an element of equity to CBA's STEP, ensuring that all participants had access to the necessary resources to succeed in their employment.
  • The partnership with HBSS and the use of QRyde's software facilitated better coordination with third-party transportation providers, ensuring timely and reliable rides for the program participants.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 1,123 rides provided between February 2017 and April 2018.
