About The Customer
Orange County is the fifth largest county in the State of Florida and is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida metropolitan statistical area, which includes 13 municipalities and 1.2 million residents. The county is best known as home to Disney World and is among the nation’s top vacation destinations. It also tops the list of large counties that know how to apply technology to the business of government. The county's IT team has garnered accolades for their contributions to governmental efficiency, including a “Best of the Web” award from the Center for Digital Government and a high ranking on a Digital Counties survey, which evaluated large counties that have successfully applied technology to meet their citizens’ needs.
The Challenge
Orange County, Florida, faced the challenge of collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data from multiple sources to ensure efficiency in government processes and provide essential government information to the public. The county aimed to reduce the cost of providing government services. The county's IT environment had to manage a wide range of services, from managing the region’s 911 fire and rescue call system to implementing security systems at the Department of Corrections. The county's 911 service alone processes approximately 1.5 million calls each year. Government offices handle more than two billion e-mail messages and 33,000 public records requests each year. The county also had to manage information systems for public safety, criminal justice, and public works as well as for an immense convention center, a thriving life science research park, and one of the largest radio systems in the country.
The Solution
Orange County, Florida, uses Information Builders’ WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) and analytics solution to help residents and visitors stay connected with government services. The county’s analytic portal saves time for government workers, supplies critical information during hurricanes and other emergencies, and increases government efficiency every day of the year. WebFOCUS consolidates the data reports and enables people to visualize it through dynamic charts and graphs. The county created an intranet portal that lets county employees view relevant data through real-time dashboards. County employees issue queries and drill into interactive charts and graphs. WebFOCUS upholds organizational security by agency and role, with complete data integrity. The county also uses the OCFL 311 InfoApp to assist residents to report local non-emergency community issues conveniently and efficiently. The InfoApp transparently maps locations of important community issues so residents can be aware of events that may impact their neighborhood.

Turning A Stadium Into A Smart Building
Honeywell created what it called the “intelligent system” for the National Stadium in Beijing, China, turning the venue for the opening and closing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics into a “smart building.” Designed by highly controversial artist Ai Weiwei, the “Bird’s Nest” remains one of the most impressive feats of stadium architecture in the world. The 250,000 square meter structure housed more than 100,000 athletes and spectators at a time. To accommodate such capacity, China turned to Honeywell’s EBI Integrated Building Management System to create an integrated “intelligent system” for improved building security, safety and energy efficiency.

Buoy Status Monitoring with LoRa
The Netherlands are well-known for their inland waterways, canals, sluices and of course port activities. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure indicates that there are thousands of buoys and fixed items in and near water environments that would profit from IoT monitoring. One of the problems with buoys for example, is that they get hit by ships and the anchor cable breaks. Without connectivity, it takes quite some time to find out that something has happened with that buoy. Not to mention the costs of renting a boat to go to the buoy to fix it. Another important issue, is that there is no real-time monitoring of the buoys at this moment. Only by physically visiting the object on the water, one gains insight in its status.

China Mobile Smart Parking
Smart Parking, powered by NB-IoT technology, is making it easier for drivers to find free parking spots. Cities can better manage their parking assets and maximize the revenue available to them as a result. Drivers searching for parking create congestion and pollution by circling and hunting for available parking. Smart Parking services are able to significantly ease these problems by guiding a driver directly to a parking space.
