About The Customer
Located just 13 miles north of Dallas, Texas, Addison is a bustling town with a thriving business community. The residential population of 14,000 swells to more than 100,000 during business hours as commuters arrive from Dallas to work at major corporations such as Mary Kay, Dresser, and Zurich America. The city prides itself on being a self-supporting organization, but the IT department had a long list of items that needed to be addressed. Effective data mining and the need for real-time data disbursement to stakeholders were paramount. The city needed information management tools to monitor budgeting and other financial requirements, security, system integration, coding, application creation, and work site management. High on the list was performance indicators to justify spending across departments.
The Challenge
Addison, Texas, a bustling town with a thriving business community, was faced with budget reductions and the challenge of managing its growing community with fluctuating and limited resources. The city's top managers and council members needed a clearer view into the financial and operational performance metrics of the city. They required real-time metrics about factors that affect Addison’s solvency, such as adhering to budgets and maintaining visibility into public safety issues, public works activities, economic development issues, the activities of the courts, and the myriad proceedings that impact the town and ensure its viability.
The Solution
Addison implemented Information Builders’ WebFOCUS Performance Management Framework (PMF) to create a business intelligence (BI) system that permits various agencies to view project data through dashboards, strategic scorecards, and user-friendly interactive reports. WebFOCUS PMF reveals the financial and operational performance metrics of the town and the trends that affect its administration. Every department uses WebFOCUS to define the scope of key projects, establish budgets, and develop timelines and deliverables. They can work with information in the format that best suits their needs – with very little involvement required from IT. With help from Information Builders Professional Services, the IT team used WebFOCUS PMF to pull financial, operational, and performance data on city projects from a Microsoft SQL Server data warehouse and presents it through interactive dashboards and reports.
Operational Impact
  • Top managers and council members have a clearer view into financial and operational performance metrics.
  • A new culture of accountability and collaboration gives citizens insight into the city’s administration.
  • Every department now uses the performance management system to define its scope of work, establish budgets, and develop project timelines and deliverables.
  • Each department has a dashboard and scorecard related to each project for a specific year.
  • The system issues automatic alerts when key metrics are out of range or projects are overdue.
