About The Customer
National Express Group plc is a leading international public transport operator, with bus, coach and rail services in the UK, Continental Europe, North Africa, North America and the Middle East. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index, with revenues of £1,867.4 million in 2014. The company operates a fleet of over 25,000 vehicles and has a global presence. Despite its size and reach, the company faced challenges in improving its CDP Climate Change disclose score, a key indicator of its environmental impact and sustainability efforts.
The Challenge
National Express Group, a leading international public transport operator, had a CDP Climate Change disclose score of 59 in 2013, placing them in band D. This was a concern for a company with challenging efficiency targets. It was clear that part of National Express Group’s 2014 environmental strategy would be to improve this score. The company aimed to become the highest-ranked public transport company in the UK, outperforming key competitors such as Stagecoach Group and Go-Ahead Group.
The Solution
National Express Group partnered with Ecometrica, a provider of sustainability software, to improve its CDP score. The two companies had been working together since 2001, but 2014 marked the first time they collaborated on a CDP submission. Ecometrica worked closely with National Express Group in the preparation and auditing of the disclosure, using a combination of sustainability software reporting and consulting efforts. The aim was to improve the score towards the top end of the scale. In addition to the CDP submission, National Express Group also took significant steps to further reduce the carbon footprint of its operations, alongside measures to manage waste and its use of water.
Operational Impact
  • National Express Group became the highest ranked public transport company in the UK, outperforming key competitors such as Stagecoach Group and Go-Ahead Group.
  • The company took significant steps to further reduce the carbon footprint of its operations, alongside measures to manage waste and its use of water.
Quantitative Benefit
  • National Express Group’s CDP Climate Change disclose score improved by 26 points in a single year, from 59 in 2013 to 85 in 2014.
  • The company's performance band improved by two levels, from D in 2013 to B in 2014.
