Montrans is a Moscow-based company and is Russia’s leading transport monitoring company. Its satellite-based object monitoring systems are used by over 1,000 companies to track some 30,000 vehicles. With 100 employees, eight offices in Russia and one in the EU, it serves both small corporate vehicle fleets and the largest and strategically important infrastructure projects in Russia and the CIS, including Moscow International Airport, Power of Siberia, PSJC Gazprom, TurkStream and Yamal LNG.
The Challenge
Transport fleets are crucial for modern commerce, and their efficiency is paramount. However, as fleets grow in size, their management becomes increasingly complex. To keep track, organizations have equipped their fleet vehicles with sensors. However, the sheer volume of telemetry data they receive is difficult to consolidate and convert into meaningful reports that point to effective business decisions. Montrans, Russia’s leading transport monitoring company, faced this challenge. It started as a fuel consumption tracker but its systems have since grown in sophistication and it wanted to move away from static reports to provide interactive fleet control and data-driven management.
The Solution
Montrans formed a new service, Montrans Analytics, based on Qlik Sense technology. Initially, Montrans used Qlik Sense for its own internal operations, monitoring 50 cars. The company conducted pilot tests and was so impressed by the analytical power of the software that it signed an OEM deal with Qlik and went to market. The Montrans Analytics cloud solution is a comprehensive fleet management and control product that simplifies financial and technical administration tasks by combining all data under a single management and control standard. Sensors monitor the condition of the vehicle, its location and movement, mileage and fuel consumption, engine hours and even the way it is being driven. The system checks the availability of permits and authorizations, and enables operators to respond to emergency situations such as route deviations, service requirements or speed delays. It also provides useful information for bookkeeping and payments.

The company has a long track record of innovative technology solutions. For example, 3M helps its customers optimize parking operations by automating fee collection and other processes. To improve support for this rapidly expanding segment, 3M needed to automate its own data collection and reporting. The company had recently purchased the assets of parking, tolling, and automatic license plate reader businesses, and required better insight into these acquisitions. Jason Fox, Mobile Application Architect at 3M, upped the ante by volunteering to deliver the new app in one weekend. For Fox and his team, these requirements meant turning to the cloud instead of an on-premises datacenter. “My first thought was to go directly to the cloud because we needed to provide access not only to our salespeople, but to resellers who didn’t have access to our internal network,” says Fox. “The cloud just seemed like a logical choice.”
