Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Melton Truck Lines is one of the largest international flatbed trucking carriers in North America, operating a fleet of 1,300 late-model trucks and over 2,000 trailers. The company hauls a variety of loads, including construction materials, air conditioners, sheet metal, metal coils, and large machinery. Each truck travels an average of about 100,000 miles annually. Melton Truck Lines has been recognized as one of the top for-hire carriers in the nation, ranking No. 87 on Transport Topics' list and No. 91 on CCJ's list of the top 250 for-hire trucking companies.
The Challenge
Delays for Melton Truck Lines drivers can result in reduced pay and missed delivery appointments. Many loads are delivered to construction sites with narrow delivery windows. Missing a scheduled delivery can lead to significant delays for subsequent appointments, as construction site managers may rearrange schedules or set new delivery times. Additionally, delays can incur fines and penalties, especially when heavy equipment deliveries require scheduled cranes for unloading. Melton drivers had been using transponder-based weigh station bypass to avoid delays, but the company was intrigued by the growth of Drivewyze weigh station bypass.
The Solution
Melton Truck Lines first learned about Drivewyze at an American Trucking Associations conference. When Drivewyze became available on the company's Omnitracs MCP200 electronic logging devices, Melton activated the complimentary Drivewyze analytics reporting tool to test it. The tool showed that Omnitracs Weigh Station Bypass, provided by Drivewyze PreClear, could have offered over 10,000 bypasses in one month. The analytics report also estimated that Melton drivers lost nearly 1,000 hours of drive time in just one month. Convinced by these results, Melton decided to provide Omnitracs Weigh Station Bypass to the entire fleet. The company activated the service on nearly 1,100 trucks, aiming to improve productivity and efficiency while taking advantage of their efforts to improve safety scores.
