The center employs more than 3,000 professional staff and 200 medical specialists who handle over 500,000 clinical visits annually. The center provides care in consultation with general practitioners, nursing homes, and health insurers. Meander is known for offering patient-friendly, knowledgeable, and trustworthy care. As part of its commitment to patient care, Meander wanted to offer a personalized, interactive patient portal to extend support for the healing process beyond the walls of its new medical facilities.
The Challenge
Meander Medical Center, a healthcare provider in the Netherlands, was seeking innovative ways to better serve its patients. The center wanted to extend its support for the healing process beyond the walls of its medical facilities by offering a personalized, interactive patient portal. This portal would provide patients with relevant personal content from various Meander systems, such as insurance information, medical records, required online forms, scheduled appointments, medications, available doctors, and individualized treatment plans. However, the center needed a portal platform and solution implementation partner to help deliver on its vision for a digital healing environment.
The Solution
Meander contracted with IBM Premier Business Partner Funatic to design and deploy an interactive patient portal and mobile apps built on IBM Digital Experience software. The Funatic team built the solution to integrate with Meander’s hospital information systems and electronic patient records (EPR) provider’s web service. The resulting solution has rich content and social alignment, and it is responsive to most devices. The solution integrates the organization’s website, patient portal, intranet, and extranet to provide a comprehensive personalized experience for people seeking information and services specific to their conditions and concerns. It enables Meander to make the relationship with its patients personal and interactive.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Barcoding technology, a commonly used method for inventory management of medical supplies, is labor intensive, time consuming, does not provide real-time visibility into inventory levels and can be prone to error. A lack of visibility into expiration dates for supplies resulted in supplies being wasted due to past expiry dates. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
