The platform currently offers seven languages and is actively adding more. The platform is unique in that it uses data science to analyze actual materials in the target language, ensuring that the content reflects how the language is actually used in real-life conversations. The platform is particularly suitable for university language departments to use with their students, as it complements the structured learning that goes on in a traditional classroom setting.
The Challenge
Ryan Ellman, the founder of Lingua Fortis, had a vision to create a language learning platform that was different from existing services. He wanted to create a platform that taught students the most important patterns in their target language first, using algorithmically created courses. This approach would ensure that the content reflected how the language is actually used in real-life conversations. However, as a solo entrepreneur with a busy schedule, Ryan faced the challenge of bringing his idea to fruition. He had experience in coding, but building and maintaining an app using code, even with a framework like Django or Rails, would be an uphill battle.
The Solution
Ryan chose to build his app using Bubble, a no-code web app builder. Bubble's ease of use and the fact that it didn't require setting up an environment or choosing a PaaS to deploy code on made it the perfect solution for Ryan. He wrote a program in Python to analyze large volumes of language data, which then created virtual flash cards that users could access through the Bubble app. The app presents users with a phrase and an audio recording of the phrase, which they are then instructed to repeat. The app then uses the principles of progressively increasing complexity and spaced repetition to help students learn as efficiently as possible.
