About The Customer
The customer is a government organization with hundreds of thousands of personnel, including direct employees, contractors, and citizens, in many locations. The organization’s personnel leverage their networked applications for multiple purposes, ranging from simple communications and collaboration to agency specific business services. Given the importance of these activities, the IT and NetOps teams are ever diligent in helping deliver seamless, secure communications to all, regardless of the physical location.
The Challenge
The government organization was involved in a new, private data center project that would be used to host all the applications and network connectivity necessary for employees and contractors to perform their strategic and tactical day-to-day operations and for citizens to interact with the agency. The challenge was simple - new network, new communications tools, new business applications – and it would require new visibility to assure quality delivery of the services. This IT staff represents one of the most experienced groups of professionals assembled and knows even the best designed and deployed network environment will have disruptions that will impact their applications and communications. It was part of their best-practices strategy to plan for this, so they could proactively mitigate that risk with proactive visibility, monitoring, and analysis.
The Solution
After careful consideration, both the integrator and government agency selected NETSCOUT’s nGeniusONE Service Assurance solution leveraging smart data from strategically deployed 9800 series InfiniStreamNG software appliances. There were several reasons NETSCOUT was selected, including: Network scalability to meet the monitoring requirements of the ingress and egress traffic on physical network links ranging from 10GB to 100GB that the agency planned to deploy in their data center and first site of the project. System-wide analysis scalability for future growth projections in network, user, application, and traffic volumes for the agency, as well as ability to focus troubleshooting in the variety of different directions the issue could be coming from. Packet-based analysis as determined to be the preferred source of “truth” by the IT team that will manage, monitor, and assure service delivery for the data center, sites, and services in use, and that could also be the data source for security forensics in the future.
