About The Customer
ABM Industries Incorporated is one of the world’s largest building and facility services companies. The Building and Energy Solutions Division is responsible for mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and power generation solutions and operates a fleet of 695 vehicles across the U.S. The majority of those trucks are service vans, along with some pickups, flatbeds, and boom trucks. Last year, ABM made GPS tracking mandatory for all of its locations, but the company has been using a GPS-based fleet solution for nearly five years. The GPS mandate builds on the success the company has seen using a fleet tracking solution from Phoenix-based GPS Insight.
The Challenge
ABM Industries Incorporated, one of the world’s largest building and facility services companies, faced challenges in tracking project activities and assuring customers that their employees and equipment were at the right location at the right time. The company often received calls from customers questioning the number of hours billed for, as they didn't believe the technician was on-site for the duration claimed. Prior to the implementation of a new fleet tracking solution, ABM locations never knew for sure where the company vehicles were. When emergency calls came in, it could take 30 to 45 minutes for dispatchers to call the drivers, check the dispatch logs, and identify which technician was the closest who could respond. The company also wanted to improve employee safety by being able to monitor vehicle location and view diagnostic and maintenance information for the company trucks.
The Solution
ABM Building and Energy Solutions, part of ABM Industries Incorporated, implemented a GPS-based fleet solution from Phoenix-based GPS Insight. The company trucks were equipped with a GPS antenna that sits on the dashboard, along with a small computer that is tied to vehicle diagnostic systems in the company van. The GPS data and FieldCentrix data are reconciled at the end of the week. The GPS information is also used to respond to customer inquiries. The fleet management solution has also allowed ABM Building and Energy Solutions to reduce vehicle idling and fuel consumption. The GPS Insight solution also provides alerts when it’s time for regular maintenance on the company vehicles. The new fleet management solution has improved ABM driver safety as well. If there are weather events, or other types of emergencies in a geographic region, ABM can call up those areas and see if any of their technicians are in a danger zone.
Operational Impact
  • Knowing where the technicians are has provided both efficiency and safety benefits.
  • It is easier to dispatch work orders based on technician location and status, and ABM Building and Energy Solutions has eliminated unnecessary phone calls.
  • ABM Building and Energy Solutions can also generate more accurate invoices because the company now has precise mileage and fuel usage data that wasn’t previously available.
  • On a corporate level, managers have visibility into the entire fleet.
  • The managers and dispatchers have access to the fleet management solution both on their PCs and via a mobile app on their phones.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The company trucks are equipped with a GPS antenna that sits on the dashboard, along with a small computer that is tied to vehicle diagnostic systems in the company van. Installation took roughly 45 minutes per vehicle. At the Phoenix location, the entire deployment took three weeks.
  • The fleet management solution has also allowed ABM Building and Energy Solutions to reduce vehicle idling and fuel consumption.
  • The GPS Insight solution also provides alerts when it’s time for regular maintenance on the company vehicles.
