About The Customer
Globalvia, headquartered in Madrid, Spain, is a global leader in transportation and infrastructure management. The company was formed as a joint venture between Bankia and the construction firm Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC). In 2015, Bankia and FCC sold their interest in Globalvia to three pension funds: UK-based USS, OPTrust in Canada, and Netherlands-based PGGM. Today, Globalvia manages numerous highway, railway, port, and hospital projects throughout Europe and Latin America. According to Public Works Financing Newsletter, it ranked second worldwide in the number of concessions managed in 2015. Globalvia’s strategic objective is to create value for its shareholders through the development of new projects and the operation of the infrastructure in this asset portfolio. Its target markets are the OECD countries, with special emphasis on the European Union and North America.
The Challenge
Globalvia, a global infrastructure concessions management company, faced the challenge of consolidating and structuring business data from 29 diverse and geographically dispersed concessions to maximize management efficiency. The company manages concessions in seven countries, including highways, railways, hospitals, and ports, each with different management criteria. There were no defined roles and responsibilities and no governing data policy. The company needed to consolidate data and define its processes to facilitate a corporate transformation. Globalvia developed the Prometheus project to chart a course for unifying and standardizing processes, systems, and corporate culture. This project led to the Delphi technology initiative to facilitate an organization-wide transformation. The project’s stakeholders set out to develop a single management model based on innovation, with higher quality data for improved internal processes and better decision-making. They wanted to establish a model that could detect trends and make it easier to determine the profitability of their concessions.
The Solution
After an initial evaluation of available business intelligence solutions, Globalvia short-listed Microsoft, Anova, and Information Builders. The selection team concluded that Information Builders’ WebFOCUS BI and analytics environment could support current and future needs and scale to handle any volume of data. Information Builders also offered integration and data quality technologies to govern a wide variety of dispersed data sources. Globalvia launched its Delphi dashboard project with support from Capgemini Consulting, a provider of consulting, technology, and outsourcing services and everis, a leading Spanish consulting firm with experience in Information Builders technology. They soon had more than 45 dashboards up and running, allowing the user community to analyze data about finances, customers, processes, and labor. The user community can access these dashboards via computers, tablets, and phones. Balanced scorecards give executives and managers a high-level view of critical indicators and metrics. These BI assets render correctly on many types of devices without requiring any modification to the base design of the system. It is easy to access real-time data that has been consolidated from many sources. Agile data access and easy-to-use dashboards give users a visual presentation of information through a customizable portal.
Operational Impact
  • Unification of information from the various concessions by integrating data in a single management model.
  • Easy access to relevant information through a corporate portal that joins important business information from throughout the company.
  • Aligning individual goals with organizational goals has helped the staff rally around a common vision.
  • Not only has Globalvia homogenized and improved company processes and systems, it has also gained more control over its geographically dispersed business.
Quantitative Benefit
  • More than 45 dashboards up and running, allowing the user community to analyze data about finances, customers, processes, and labor.
