About The Customer
EVgo is the largest public fast-charging network for electric vehicles in the US, with over 850 charging locations nationwide. The company is rapidly scaling and is on track to triple its network in the next five years. EVgo began working with Arcadia in early 2021 on a limited development basis and soon upgraded to the Signal API plan. The company faced challenges in managing the accuracy of hundreds of utility bills received monthly from various locations across the country and needed a digital and accurate utility rate database to streamline its operations.
The Challenge
EVgo, the largest public fast-charging network for electric vehicles in the US, was facing a significant challenge in managing the accuracy of hundreds of utility bills received monthly from various locations across the country. The complexity of understanding local rate structures and tracking bill accuracy was overwhelming. The manual process of sorting through billing details was not only time-consuming but also prone to errors. EVgo needed a digital and accurate utility rate database that could handle complex factors such as energy usage, peak demand, monthly fixed rates, season, time of use, hours, and territories. This information was crucial for checking the accuracy of utility bills, optimizing utility tariffs, and making informed decisions about future projects. The existing databases were outdated, forcing EVgo staff to manually check each utility website for accurate data, a process that was unsustainable.
The Solution
EVgo found the solution in Signal, a comprehensive rate engine and utility price database from Arcadia's data and API platform, Arc. Initially, EVgo adopted Signal's self-service option, which allowed them to access advanced tariff tools at a lower cost and effort. Later, they upgraded to a Signal enterprise license, gaining access to robust APIs that integrated into their platforms, backed by performance SLAs. Signal provided the accuracy that other rate databases lacked, tracking the current electricity market and hourly retail pricing, including 15,000 tariff book updates every month. It captured every rate component, tariff eligibility rule, and rate option, supporting flat consumption rates, tiered and time-of-use pricing, system and dynamic peaks, complex ratchets, and sophisticated billing rules. The on-demand cost calculator transformed tariff complexity into accurate energy cost calculations, driving actionable business insights. EVgo’s team was able to successfully use the tools by accessing Arcadia's documentation and customer service.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Arcadia's Signal has brought significant operational benefits to EVgo. The company has been able to save money and staff time, identify cost savings from inaccurate utility bills, and incorporate more accurate utility rate information into station development decisions. The ability to easily and accurately check utility bills for errors has not only saved EVgo money but also valuable time. The up-to-date rates provided by Signal have helped EVgo make more effective decisions regarding site evaluation. Furthermore, Signal has been instrumental in providing metrics such as utility revenue, overall throughput, and the number of customers, giving EVgo’s business development team the necessary background about the size and reach of a utility. EVgo’s public policy team also uses Signal to check rates in specific places for context regarding demand charges and other information.
Quantitative Benefit
  • EVgo saved tens of thousands of dollars in the last year by accurately checking utility bills for errors.
  • The company identified cost savings from inaccurate utility bills.
  • EVgo saved valuable time by eliminating the need to manually look up rates.
