About The Customer
The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is one of the top 100 largest districts in the U.S. It is headquartered in El Paso, Texas and serves 60,000 students across 100 campuses spread over 250 square miles. The district employs 9,000 staff members. The IT team at EPISD, led by Steve Crye, is responsible for keeping the students and staff connected to the Information Age. They manage a network that includes tens of thousands of IT-savvy students, some of whom attempt to circumvent the District’s security measures. The team also brings up as many as 2 new school campuses each year and manages other large projects.
The Challenge
The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is one of the top 100 largest districts in the U.S. with 60,000 students and 9,000 staff spread across 100 campuses over 250 square miles. The IT team, led by Steve Crye, was facing challenges with their previous monitoring software. The team was frustrated with the lack of a 'big picture' view of the network. They were receiving multiple emails about any issue, and had to run reports to get actionable information. Furthermore, Steve had to escalate issues to the sales staff of the previous vendor to get adequate tech support, which was not an efficient process. The team was also tasked with bringing up as many as 2 new school campuses each year and managing other large projects, adding to their workload.
The Solution
The EPISD team chose Zenoss as their new monitoring solution after Steve Crye saw a review of the product in InfoWorld in 2008. He was impressed by the 'big view' that Zenoss provided, describing it as 'simple and elegant'. The team appreciated that with Zenoss, one event would equal precisely one alert, which could be assigned to one person to clear. This streamlined their process and made it easier to manage alerts and issues. The Zenoss solution provided the team with the efficiency and support they needed to manage their sprawling network and ensure that students, teachers, parents, and administrators had always-on access at world-class speed.
Operational Impact
  • The team is now able to get a 'big picture' view of the network, improving their ability to monitor and manage the system.
  • One event now equals precisely one alert, which can be assigned to one person to clear, streamlining the process and reducing the number of unnecessary alerts.
  • The team is now able to provide better support to remote facilities.
  • The team is now able to analyze network usage to plan better for future capacity needs.
  • The team is now able to hit departmental goals better than before.
