About The Customer
FSM Ground Services Management is the operator of the Tel-O-Fun bicycle-sharing system in Tel Aviv, Israel. The system is used for approximately ten thousand journeys every day, with over 1700 bicycles spread across 170 docking stations throughout the city. Each docking station contains a terminal where users can purchase subscriptions, rent, obtain, and return bicycles. The bicycles can be returned to any station at any time. FSM is committed to providing a seamless and positive customer experience, which includes reliable and fast communication for processing payment transactions.
The Challenge
FSM Ground Services Management, the operator of Tel-O-Fun bicycle-sharing system in Tel Aviv, Israel, faced a significant challenge. The system, which sees around ten thousand journeys daily and comprises over 1700 bicycles across 170 docking stations, required each terminal to be connected to the main control center for customer identification and bike release. Additionally, these terminals needed to process payment transactions swiftly and reliably to ensure a positive customer experience. However, implementing a wired solution would have necessitated costly roadwork, council permits, and significant disruption. Furthermore, any solution had to be rugged enough to withstand Tel Aviv's harsh summer temperatures (40° C / 104° F) and high humidity levels.
The Solution
FSM sought a wireless solution to this challenge and approached Orange as a network partner. Orange's strong relationship with Digi International, a renowned technology vendor, led FSM to evaluate Digi's product range. After testing various connectivity solutions, FSM selected the ConnectPort®, a wireless 3G router with multiple Ethernet ports to support terminal functionality. Crucially, the router is fully PCI-DSS Compliant, a vital feature since the terminals process payments from bicycle renters. The ConnectPort® also boasts an extended operating temperature range and an industrial enclosure, ensuring it is not at risk of failing or rusting due to Tel Aviv's harsh environmental conditions.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Digi's ConnectPort® has been a resounding success for FSM and the Tel-O-Fun bicycle-sharing system. The solution has ensured reliable connectivity and seamless payment processing, significantly enhancing the customer experience. The robustness of the hardware has also proven capable of withstanding the city's harsh environmental conditions. Encouraged by the success in Tel Aviv, FSM is planning to expand Tel-O-Fun to other cities in Israel and even to other countries. They have expressed confidence in Digi's equipment and plan to use it again, citing no issues with connectivity or the equipment in the field. Furthermore, they believe the hardware will support future potential features of the bike rental system, such as adding Voice Over IP customer support to the terminals.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Enabled around ten thousand daily journeys with reliable connectivity
  • Implemented across 170 docking stations throughout the city
  • Supported over 1700 bicycles in the system
