The Challenge
Driving safety is a critical issue on today's roads and highways, with a significant number of large trucks involved in injury and fatal crashes. Cargo Transporters faced challenges related to critical event-related accidents and overall accident-related costs. The company aimed to reduce hard braking and stability control events, easily identify high-risk drivers, ensure drivers' safety on every trip, and develop better one-on-one relationships with drivers. They also wanted to open lines of communication without the fear of reprimand.
The Solution
Cargo Transporters implemented the Critical Event Reporting (CER) application to support proactive safety measures. The CER application continuously monitors the fleet for hard braking, lane departure disabled warnings, and roll stability. When a critical event is detected, it sends a near real-time email alert to the safety team and a message to the driver. The company customized the parameters of its hard braking event trigger to record only events occurring over 40 mph, making the system more manageable and realistic for drivers. This adjustment significantly reduced the number of alerts, allowing the safety team to focus on more critical situations. The CER technology provides near real-time, objective visibility into driving habits, helping to improve risk management and reduce accident liability.

For Fox and his team, these requirements meant turning to the cloud instead of an on-premises datacenter. “My first thought was to go directly to the cloud because we needed to provide access not only to our salespeople, but to resellers who didn’t have access to our internal network,” says Fox. “The cloud just seemed like a logical choice.”
