About The Customer
BluePulse is a leading maritime data analytics company that aims to help the maritime industry build sustainable operations at low cost. They challenge traditional practices and aspire to utilize AI technology to create innovative solutions. Their primary focus is on reefer container ships, for which they aim to save energy costs and reduce carbon emissions. They do this by testing alternative routes through their energy simulation tool, BlueRoute, which offers a high level of accuracy.
The Challenge
BluePulse, a leading maritime data analytics company, was faced with the challenge of helping reefer container ships save energy costs and reduce carbon emissions. The traditional Great Circle Navigation practice, which involves sailing the shortest distance between two points on the planet, was not always the most energy-efficient. BluePulse needed to test over a thousand shipping paths to identify the most optimal one for reefer energy saving and fuel consumption. To do this, they required global, reliable weather information to add to their digital energy simulation twin.
The Solution
In collaboration with the French Space Agency, BluePulse developed an energy simulation tool, BlueRoute, with an accuracy level of over 97%. This tool was designed to provide shipping companies with strategic energy efficiency insights in real-time, allowing them to adapt their conditions accordingly. To test the theory that the fastest shipping route may not always be the most energy-friendly, BluePulse integrated Spire’s weather data forecast into their reefer fleet energy simulation tool. This integration allowed them to estimate the energy utilized by reefer fleets and identify which voyage paths were the most fuel efficient and carbon-friendly.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of BluePulse's energy simulation tool, BlueRoute, has revolutionized the way reefer container ships operate. By integrating Spire’s weather data forecast into their tool, they have been able to provide real-time, strategic energy efficiency insights to shipping companies. This has allowed these companies to adapt their conditions accordingly, leading to significant energy and cost savings. Furthermore, by challenging the traditional Great Circle Navigation practice, BluePulse has demonstrated that the fastest shipping route is not always the most energy-friendly, leading to a shift in operational practices within the maritime industry.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 5% of total ships fuel saved on 63% tested routes
  • 297 MWh reefer energy savings per crossing
  • 136 GWh of potential savings per year for all Atlantic crossings
