About The Customer
The Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka & Finance PLC (MBSL) is a prominent financial institution in Sri Lanka with a rich history as the country’s pioneer specialist in trade finance and investment banking. It is one of the most stable and fastest-growing financial services providers in the country, with a rapidly expanding team, branch network, and product portfolio. MBSL serves 21 million islanders through its 49 branches and service centers, and its 1,000 employees ensure its financial security and stability. The bank's IT team, led by Chamara Withanachchi, plays a crucial role in managing the bank's operations and ensuring its efficiency.
The Challenge
The Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka & Finance PLC (MBSL) is a leading financial services provider in Sri Lanka, serving 21 million islanders through its 49 branches and service centers. As the bank grew, so did its transaction volume and workload. The bank's IT team, led by Chamara Withanachchi, was manually entering and running jobs on the system, which led to increasing inconsistencies. The manual operations were not only inconsistent but also delayed branch openings, affecting the bank's efficiency and customer service. The challenge was to improve consistency and reliability, reduce errors and operational cost, and streamline processing without increasing the headcount.
The Solution
To address the challenge, Withanachchi turned to Fortra, a trusted vendor, for advice. Fortra recommended the Robot Schedule workload automation software. Withanachchi also added the Robot Replay plug-in to comply with banking regulations and handle complex job scenarios. The Fortra solution was chosen due to its IBM i-centric architecture, experienced support, and Withanachchi's positive relationship with the Fortra team. The implementation of the Robot solution was done in close collaboration with the Fortra Tech Support team. The Robot Schedule made the process of submitting IBM i jobs easy, with robust and detailed job definitions and automated scheduling. The Robot Replay plug-in recorded what operators did every night, learned the steps, captured them, and then replayed the images, saving significant time.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Robot Schedule and Robot Replay solutions brought significant operational benefits to MBSL. The automated scheduling led to fewer incorrect parameters, wrong submissions, object locks, and missed dependencies, improving the consistency and reliability of operations. The bank was able to manage its increased workload with the same number of staff, as the automation freed up two operators for other tasks. The bank also achieved its goal of expanding its customer base and branch network. The solutions also helped the bank comply with banking regulations and handle complex job scenarios. Withanachchi appreciated the product quality, ease of use, and the post-sale support from Fortra.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced end-of-day run time by 50%
  • Saved 5 hours per day with Robot Replay
  • Managed the system with only two operators, freeing up two other staff members for other tasks
