About The Customer
The customer in this case study is a healthcare provider that uses the Asthma Control Test (ACT) to monitor patients' asthma conditions. The ACT is a tool used by medical assistants in the clinic to document and track patients' asthma symptoms and control. The customer was facing challenges in referencing and analyzing ACT data, which was previously done through an excel report. The lack of an efficient and effective system for data analysis and visualization made it difficult for the healthcare provider to have meaningful conversations about ACT documentation and patient outcomes.
The Challenge
The Asthma Control Test Qlik Sense application was built to assist in trending scores documented by the Medical Assistants within the clinic flowsheet. The challenge prior to the application was referencing a prior week lookback of data via an excel report. There simply could not be a meaningful conversation involving the ACT documentation without being able to easily show what was occurring.
The Solution
The solution to the customer's challenge was the implementation of the Asthma Control Test Qlik Sense application. This application was built to assist in trending scores documented by the Medical Assistants within the clinic flowsheet. The application uses data from Epic Clarity, a comprehensive database system, to provide real-time analytics and visualization of the ACT data. This allows for easy referencing and analysis of the data, enabling meaningful conversations about ACT documentation and patient outcomes.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Asthma Control Test Qlik Sense application has significantly improved the process of documenting and analyzing ACT scores. The application provides real-time analytics and visualization of the data, making it easier for medical assistants to reference and analyze the data.
  • The transparency in the data also created user competitiveness to meet the goal set forth.
  • Future plans to implement at all ambulatory clinics, and measure if improved ACT scoring in the clinics reduces asthma related inpatient admits
Quantitative Benefit
  • The percentage of ACT scores captured from patients and placed into the flowsheet has improved from approximately 50% to 75% since the Qlik application implementation.
