About The Customer
Al Khayyat Investments (AKI Group) is a family-owned company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that operates a diverse range of autonomous business units, including retail, consumer, contracting, pharmaceutical, strategic investments, and automotive. Founded in 1982, the AKI Group has grown into a $1.6 billion business with strong partnerships with leading international brands. The company is committed to operational excellence and has a state-of-the-art logistics center in Dubai. The AKI Group's in-house transport operation is responsible for providing delivery services across the UAE's seven emirates, catering to a wide range of customer locations such as hospitals, pharmacies, shopping malls, retail stores, and restaurants.
The Challenge
The AKI Group faced significant inefficiencies in its in-house transport operation, which was responsible for delivering to a wide range of customer locations across the UAE. The company processed around 25,000 orders a month, equating to 12,500 deliveries to up to 5,500 customer sites. Manually planning such a large multi-drop delivery operation was proving to be inefficient. Additionally, the company had to comply with strict regulations governing commercial vehicle usage for different types of loads, which added complexity to the planning process. The transport team also faced challenges related to workforce management, as each delivery vehicle was typically staffed with a two- or three-man team, leading to increased workforce overhead and potential delays.
The Solution
To address the inefficiencies in its transport operation, the AKI Group implemented Paragon's routing and scheduling software. This solution included Street Level Mapping and Average Road Speed Data to achieve higher levels of route accuracy, as well as Route Execution to provide real-time visibility of the operation. The software allowed the AKI Group to automatically factor in vehicle restrictions when planning deliveries, ensuring regulatory compliance while maximizing capacity. The implementation of Paragon's software enabled the AKI Group to consolidate its planning resources into a single team, creating a centralized planning function responsible for managing all deliveries, monitoring transport in real-time, and analyzing planned versus actual performance for continuous improvement.
Operational Impact
  • The AKI Group saw significant operational improvements across essential transport KPIs after implementing Paragon's routing and scheduling software.
  • The company was able to reduce the size of its fleet from 84 to 52 commercial vehicles.
  • Average deliveries per vehicle increased from 4.7 to 12.4, a rise of 164%.
  • The solution enabled the AKI Group to better manage delivery volume peaks, with around 45% of orders being placed in the last four days of the month.
  • The transport team could identify and address areas of underperformance, improving overall efficiency and productivity.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Annual transport cost savings of $1 million.
  • Increased average deliveries per vehicle by 164%.
  • Reduced fleet size by 38%.
  • Lowered the average cost per delivery by 65%.
