About The Customer
This large government agency has thousands of employees in hundreds of offices performing their jobs in support of their constituents. Operating in a highly collaborative manner with several other agencies, they work to ensure data sharing and knowledge transfers that help them all perform their associated tasks at peak efficiency. The security, performance, and availability of the application services used by this government organization and their peer agencies are top priorities for their information technology (IT) and network operations (NetOps) teams. Strategic cloud initiatives planned and executed by IT over the last few years placed them in a strong position to support workforce shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent return to offices. Throughout their digital transformations, application migrations, and workforce shuffling, the NetOps team has relied on their NETSCOUT® solutions to assure performance, availability, employee digital experience, and security.
The Challenge
The agency has split the hosting of their well-known business and custom agency applications between their private data center and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. Employees, wherever they are located, are connecting to the applications via the closest Equinix co-location (co-lo) facility where the agency has deployed mostly access technology, including Internet Switch links (ISLs) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways. From the co-los, employee traffic is sent to the location where the application in use is hosted. Some software as a service applications (SaaS) are also in use, such as Salesforce.com. This complex, hybrid cloud environment supports significant agency business for the public’s benefit and safety. Constant availability and consistent performance, for all users, accessing from anywhere, through any of the co-los, to any application was the challenge for the NetOps team.
The Solution
The NetOps team had a comprehensive strategy to gain the visibility and analysis they required to support this complex, distributed environment through their use of NETSCOUT technology including: InfiniStreamNG (ISNG) 9800 series appliances, with support for 100 GB segments and extended storage capability, are deployed to monitor inbound and outbound packet traffic on all the ISLs and VPN gateways in the data center and at the Equinix co-los. The packet data, which is converted into NETSCOUT’s patented Adaptive Service Intelligence® (ASI) smart data, is analyzed by nGeniusONE Omnis Cyber Investigator and for network and application performance management and security use cases. ASI smart data from these ISNG appliances, analyzed in real time by the nGeniusONE Service Assurance solution, is providing metrics to help validate performance of applications before and after upgrades and migrations, troubleshoot workflows to speed resolution of application slowdowns, and help create configurable reports and dashboards that provide quick details to pinpoint root cause of problems or provide trended information for planning purposes.
