The Norwegian School of Veterinary Science is a learning establishment for students training to become veterinarians and those studying for other animal-related qualifications. The school is responsible for the major part of all veterinary research conducted in Norway. Laptop computers are an essential learning tool for the school’s students, and some members of staff use them to help plan lessons and give lectures. Theft prevention is taken incredibly seriously at the school and security policies are in place to prevent its costly, portable goods from being stolen.

While aware that physical deterrents such as cable locks aren’t sufficient to stop the most determined criminal, the school needed another security measure in case one of its 200 laptops went missing. “The school’s laptop computers are a vital piece of teaching and learning equipment for both our students and staff,” said Kjetil Simeon Olsen, IT advisor at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science. “If any of them go missing, it can be hugely disruptive for both students and teaching staff. We want to ensure that in the event one of the mobile devices goes missing, we would be able to get it back.”

When Olsen learned about Absolute, he realized that it was the ideal solution for their needs and would offer the school an additional layer of security for its mobile devices. IT manager, Gjermund Holden, stated that the economical aspect also made Absolute’s solution interesting, “We estimated the cost of implementing Absolute on a computer to be approximately 1.5 – 2 percent of the total costs of one laptop. Counting on the total costs, it was not a difficult decision.” After deploying Absolute, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science did become a victim of crime when one of its laptops was stolen from a classroom in spite of the fact it was attached to the desk by a cable lock. The school contacted the Absolute Investigations team who tracked down the missing device. Absolute is also able to remotely delete any data saved on the device that may be misused. The school can specify sensitive files on their devices and execute an emergency data delete operation to help ensure the files do not end up with unscrupulous individuals. The software can be used to identify whether files have been accessed post-theft and it can also remotely disable a stolen computer to make it useless to a thief.

In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
