Founded in Berkeley, USA in 2017, MicroByre is a biotechnology company that uses genetic engineering techniques to modify non-model species into biomanufacturing and genetically tractable model strains. Their focus is on economically viable fermentation from non-agricultural foodstocks by taming and genetically manipulating previously untapped bacteria. Traditional biomanufacturing is limited to non-model organisms that cannot be directly genetically engineered and model organisms that are drastically unsuited to commodity chemical production.
