关于客户
The City of San Marcos, located in San Diego County, California, is a rapidly growing community known for its vibrant economy, educational institutions, and quality of life. As the second busiest surface arterial in the county, San Marcos Boulevard is a critical transportation corridor that supports a high volume of daily traffic, ranging from 22,000 to 46,000 vehicles. The boulevard is lined with businesses, schools, and residential areas, making it a vital artery for the city's residents and commuters. The City of San Marcos is committed to leveraging innovative technologies to enhance traffic management, reduce congestion, and improve the overall transportation experience for its citizens. By implementing advanced traffic control solutions, the city aims to create a more efficient and sustainable urban environment.
挑战
San Marcos Boulevard, the second busiest surface arterial in San Diego County, faced significant congestion and delays due to high traffic volumes ranging from 22,000 to 46,000 vehicles daily. The corridor, which intersects a major highway and is lined with businesses and schools, experienced congestion during four peak travel periods: Morning Peak (AM), Midday Peak (MD), Evening Peak (PM), and School Hours/Off Peak (OFF). Despite having a previously coordinated traffic signal plan, the City of San Marcos continued to struggle with traffic congestion, necessitating a more effective solution to manage the high volume of vehicles and improve traffic flow.
解决方案
The City of San Marcos selected McCain’s QuicTrac adaptive control system to optimize traffic flow on San Marcos Boulevard. This system was chosen for its compatibility with the city's existing controllers, cost-effectiveness, and ease of setup and maintenance. QuicTrac adaptive control provides real-time signal adjustments based on prevailing traffic conditions, making it an ideal solution for managing the high traffic volumes on the corridor. The deployment involved configuring the corridor into three adaptive groups for optimal performance. Existing infrastructure, including loop and video detectors and controllers, was utilized where available, and necessary communications and infrastructure upgrades were completed along the corridor. The adaptive control system significantly improved traffic flow by making real-time adjustments to signal coordination based on demand, resulting in reduced vehicle delays, stops, and fuel consumption.
运营影响
  • The implementation of QuicTrac adaptive control on San Marcos Boulevard led to significant improvements in travel time, delay, and corridor speed, far exceeding initial expectations.
  • The system achieved a benefit-cost ratio of 8:1, demonstrating its cost-effectiveness and the substantial public benefits it delivered.
  • The City of San Marcos received local and national recognition for their 'Smart Corridor' project, showcasing the benefits of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions.
  • The adaptive control system provided maximum public benefit at minimal cost, making it a highly efficient solution for traffic management.
  • The successful deployment of the system positioned the City of San Marcos as a technology leader in Southern California, paving the way for future ITS deployments, including Connected Vehicle Research.
数量效益
  • 46.0% reduction in vehicle delay
  • 39.1% reduction in the number of stops
  • 7.8% reduction in fuel consumption
  • $645,000 in benefits to the public during the first year of operation
  • 11.8% increase in travel speed during peak periods
