Arcturus Therapeutics, a leader in RNA medicines, faced several challenges in their research process. The lack of standardized molecular design tools hindered their ability to collaborate effectively. Their legacy Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) was cumbersome and led to low usage among scientists. It took an average of 10 days for experimental data to be entered into the system, if at all. Additionally, the absence of a standard data store and sequence repository scattered data and prevented the capture of institutional knowledge.

Arcturus Therapeutics implemented Benchling's all-in-one, cloud-based suite to address their challenges. This suite allowed Arcturus scientists to design sequences together and share plasmids and annotations, enhancing collaboration. The Benchling Lab Notebook, with its rich protocol repository and direct Molecular Biology integration, was adopted by 90% of the users, a significant increase from the 20-30% user adoption of the legacy ELN. The time to data entry was reduced from 10 days to 1 day. Benchling became the central source of truth for the organization, enabling scientists to quickly locate data and reallocate more than 30% of their day-to-day work towards science, rather than note-taking and searching data.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Barcoding technology, a commonly used method for inventory management of medical supplies, is labor intensive, time consuming, does not provide real-time visibility into inventory levels and can be prone to error. A lack of visibility into expiration dates for supplies resulted in supplies being wasted due to past expiry dates. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
