Enclara Pharmacia is a national full-service mail order and Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) supplier of medications and clinical services developed specifically for the hospice and palliative care industry. It was formed through the merger of Enclara Health and Hospice Pharmacia. The goal of the merger was two-fold: to minimize the cost of palliative care drugs for end-of-life patients, and to cure some of the clinical, financial, and regulatory challenges uniquely faced by the hospice sector. Following the merger, Enclara’s leadership team made data a major focal point of the organization going forward. As the largest and oldest hospice pharmacy provider in the U.S., Enclara Pharmacia has learned an important lesson: the faster a hospice can gain insights from its pharmacy transactions, the more effectively it can identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve the patient experience.

Enclara Pharmacia, a Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) for the hospice and palliative care industry, was formed with the goal of minimizing the cost of palliative care drugs for end-of-life patients and addressing the clinical, financial, and regulatory challenges faced by the hospice sector. One of the major challenges was the lack of real-time data on medication costs and utilization trends. Hospice executives needed this data to manage their expenses effectively. The old reporting platform used by Enclara Pharmacia produced static reports that didn't allow hospices to analyze or visualize their data. This lack of transparency and flexibility was a significant issue. Furthermore, pharmacy expenses are one of the largest material cost drivers for hospices, making it crucial to align expenditures with a high standard of care.

Enclara Pharmacia used Information Builders’ WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) and analytics platform to create Enclarity, a customer-facing analytic environment for their hospice clients. Enclarity is an interactive dashboard and reporting environment that delivers hospice analytics, such as utilization and prescription patterns. Authorized hospice personnel can view their own pharma and business data, on a 24/7 schedule dictated by the moment-to-moment needs of a palliative care setting. The dashboard contains a knowledge base that allows hospice facilities to make determinations for themselves. Authorized users can see at a glance how many of the drugs used in a patient’s regimen are outside the standard family of drugs included in the PBM’s hospice pricing structure. They can recommend alternative formulary drugs that can be effectively used. They can drill immediately into the relevant data, and make informed decisions about how to fine-tune the drug therapy.
