Elbee runs the decoclico.fr and Delamaison.fr websites, market leaders in online home furnishing sales. Delamaison.fr leads the way in online decoration and home furnishings. The site focuses on seasonal collections by the biggest brands in this sector. With over 3 million unique visitors each month, Delamaison.fr is without doubt the e-commerce site of choice for home decorating enthusiasts, with an unbeatable catalogue of over 40,000 products from 400 brands of tableware, decorating and furnishing, as well as kitchen utensils, domestic appliances, lighting, garden furnishings, household linen and bedding. Elbee is based in Ulis (Essonne).

Delamaison.fr had been using a CDN since 2009, to cope with the peaks in traffic associated with Christmas, sale periods and one-off promotions. Although happy with the display speed of its pages thanks to the CDN, the time taken to update pages was causing problems; with so many product references, the site sometimes needs to update tens of thousands of pages per hour, which is a very difficult task for a CDN provider to manage using an infrastructure based on a large number of servers. The period of time known as the cache invalidation (the time it takes to tell the CDN server storing the page in a cache that it needs to connect to the Delamaison.fr source server because there has been an update) was often taking longer than an hour - a situation that was a concern for visitors to the site and hard to understand internally for the staff modifying product information. The IT department then needed to introduce unnecessary workarounds to satisfy staff frustrated by the delays.

With a simpler, more modern architecture, plus the speed benefits of a fibre-optic network, CDNetworks lowered update times for prices, photos, delivery times and stock levels on product information pages. Although Delamaison.fr still modifies thousands of pages per hour, CDNetworks carries out the changes in a few seconds and guarantees to complete 98% of updates in less than 5 minutes - something it sometimes took the previous CDN provider an hour to achieve. “It’s clear that CDNetworks is extremely well suited to an e-commerce business like Delamaison.fr, which can require thousands of updates per hour,” confirms Philippe Bruand, Elbee’s IT Systems Director.

The client had previously deployed a one-meter-per-store monitoring program. Given the manner in which energy consumption changes with external temperature, hour of the day, day of week and month of year, a single meter solution lacked the ability to detect the difference between a true problem and a changing store environment.
