IoT GUIDE

We’re in the midst of a mobile enterprise revolution. But what does that mean? Mobile technology is becoming increasingly important in the business market as more and more people are using mobile technology for both work and personal use. This includes your employees, your partners, and, most importantly, your customers.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Evidence of the growing momentum of mobile technology in the enterprise can be seen in the recent article, “What’s at the Heart of Digital Transformation?” But digital transformation of this kind doesn’t come easily. Businesses will face all kinds of obstacles along the way, including making key decisions involving complex technology markets with a variety of vendors offering different approaches to enterprise mobility.

According to the 451 Research report, “The Impact of Mobility in Support of Digital Transformation in the Enterprise,” there are several things to consider about mobility in digital transformation:

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategies do not equal increased enterprise mobility. According to the report, more than 50% of employees use their smartphones for business use. However, that hasn’t led to dramatic changes in business processes, employee productivity, or customer satisfaction.

Corporate mobile strategies are reactive. The report shows that most mobile initiatives are not proactive, although 70% of responding businesses have a corporate mobile strategy in place. They are simply in response to the growing number of employees using mobile devices for work.

Businesses face a fragmented technology landscape. According to the report, companies are struggling with the growing demand for mobile apps in the marketplace and the complexities of developing customized enterprise apps.

Mobile enterprise options

Several technology vendors have entered the market in recent years to address mobile challenges and provide companies with various approaches to enterprise mobility. According to the 451 Research report, there has been a surge in vendors with low-code development technology platforms, predefined templates, prebuilt connectors, or mobile backend-as-a-service options. All of these tools are designed to make it simpler for companies to produce enterprise apps and drastically reduce development time.

The partnership between Apple and SAP is one example of how new advances will help companies easily customize enterprise apps for iPhones and iPads. Low-code development technology will be increasingly critical as the 451 Research study shows that 75% of US corporate buyers in the market for smartphones plan to purchase iPhones.

That’s a meaningful statistic considering that most businesses are still in the beginning stages of their mobile strategy. The 451 Research report predicts that smartphone use will continue to grow and eventually become the primary channel that businesses use to engage with partners, employees, and customers.

Do you have a mobile strategy in place for your organization?
