About The Customer
The World Meteorological Organization is the United Nations’ authoritative voice on the state and behavior of the earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources. An intergovernmental organization spanning 187 Member States and Territories, WMO provides the framework for international meteorological cooperation worldwide. Since its establishment, WMO has played a unique and powerful role in contributing to the safety and welfare of humanity. Under WMO leadership and within the framework of WMO programs, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services contribute substantially to the protection of life and property against natural disasters, to safeguard the environment and to enhance the economic and social well-being of all sectors of society in areas such as food security, water resources and transport.
The Challenge
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an intergovernmental organization spanning 187 Member States and Territories. It provides the framework for international meteorological cooperation worldwide. WMO facilitates the free and unrestricted exchange of data and information, products and services in real- or near-real time on matters relating to safety and security of society, economic welfare and the protection of the environment. It contributes to policy formulation in these areas at national and international levels. WMO needed a secure, redundant way for its Members to connect to a remote site using a public infrastructure. With this goal in mind, Vladislava Toukalek, acting chief of the WMO Information Technology division, determined that a multi-homing and WAN acceleration solution would help WMO achieve this goal in the most cost effective manner.
The Solution
WMO was determined to purchase a solution that would be easy to configure, upgrade, and expand. Toukalek also wanted to ease the management burden of the IT team, who had become unnecessarily accustomed to investing a considerable amount of time nursing the existing network setup. Compatibility was also a key factor in the WMO decision. Given that the organization’s current infrastructure was heavily Nortel-based, WMO looked very closely at the Nortel Alteon line. However, in a side-by-side LinkProof and Alteon comparison, LinkProof emerged the more flexible and affordable solution. In the end, WMO purchased two LinkProof boxes and placed them in front of WMO’s local area network (LAN). Though its membership base consists of scientists scattered across the world, WMO users now enjoy enhanced remote access to shared applications. By consolidating multi-homing connection management, WAN acceleration and application security, LinkProof ensures reliable access and fast response times for all mission-critical applications residing in different locations in the world.
Operational Impact
  • WMO’s IT team is pleased with its improved network performance, which has also opened up new possibilities for their existing infrastructure.
  • Currently, LinkProof helps WMO manage its two main ISP connections.
  • LinkProof has also set off a positive ’domino effect’ in the IT department. For the first time, WMO is considering adding an additional dedicated line to serve its Conference Center, in order to widen its palette of services.
  • LinkProof has also paved the way for WMO’s network’s - and WMO’s - future growth.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The project was delivered on time and on budget, and downtime for the entire change was under one hour.
