About The Customer
Perkins and Will is an interdisciplinary, research-based architecture and design firm. The firm is committed to designing places that make a positive difference in the world. With 21 studios across North America, Perkins and Will has a significant presence in the architecture and design industry. The firm has set up return to studio task forces for each location to ensure the safety of their employees as they return to work amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The firm's Workplace Strategy experts have also created a Road Map for Return to guide the near-term transition back to the workplace.
The Challenge
Perkins and Will, an interdisciplinary, research-based architecture and design firm, faced the challenge of ensuring the safety of their employees as they returned to work amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The firm needed a comprehensive guide to facilitate the transition back to the workplace, taking into account factors such as employee readiness, distance analysis, and new protocols. The firm had to support the return of 2,600 employees across 21 studios in North America. The process of planning resource allocation in the workspace needed to be three times faster to meet the demands of the situation.
The Solution
Perkins and Will turned to CARTO to automate presence tracking with a series of data-driven dashboards and apps. These dashboards allowed the firm's return to studio task forces to see high-level floor occupancy, identify off-limits workstations, track who is scheduled to be in the studio at any given time, and organize a plan to use a checkerboard pattern for workstations to maintain social distancing. The dashboards also helped determine conference room occupancy given new social distancing rules, turn collaborative areas into touchdown spaces, visualize where mobile seating can be incorporated, and integrate with apps to determine whether remote employees can or should cede their desk to another colleague. CARTO's connectivity to other solutions and tools was a key advantage for Perkins and Will, ensuring they continue to capture data effectively and improve the employee experience in the gradual return to the new normal.
