About The Customer
Wombat Security Technologies is a company born from research at the world-renowned Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). While at CMU, the cofounders lead the largest national research project on combating phishing attacks. Their goal was to address the human element in cyber security and develop novel, more effective anti-phishing filtering solutions. With funding from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense, they developed a suite of cyber security software training and filtering technologies which are the foundation for Wombat Security Technologies’ line of products. Their Security Education Platform includes integrated knowledge assessments, a library of simulated attacks, and interactive training modules, which have been proven to reduce successful phishing attacks and malware infections by up to 90%.
The Challenge
When Ian Kane, Senior Data Warehouse Architect, joined Wombat Security Technologies, his job was to build a data warehouse from scratch. With the Wombat Security Technologies already on the Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) in MySQL, moving the data to a Postgres database Amazon RDS was a natural choice given that they were already on the Amazon Cloud. Most of the ETL coding would be usable on a standard Postgres RDBMS. Because they regenerate their data warehouse every 15 minutes doing ETL, they needed a solution that could do log-based change data capture (CDC) to migrate their data continuously.
The Solution
After performing research on the AWS Marketplace, Kane found Qlik and he used the free, 30-day trial to test how data migration would work to the Amazon Cloud. He found that Qlik could move his data continuously with zero downtime. The change data capture (CDC) offered with Qlik worked to move data near real-time for Wombat’s frequent data loading to a Postgres database on Amazon RDS where they were able to move a half billion records quickly and easily.
Operational Impact
  • The solution provided by Qlik allowed for continuous data migration with zero downtime.
  • The change data capture (CDC) feature of Qlik enabled near real-time data loading to a Postgres database on Amazon RDS.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Successfully moved a half billion records quickly and easily.
