About The Customer
Vasaloppet is a nonprofit organization based in Mora, Sweden. The organization manages and operates an annual 90-km cross-country ski race between Salen and Mora, Sweden. The race is based on a historic journey by Gustav Eriksson in 1521. Today’s annual Vasaloppet race schedule includes eight cross-country skiing races, five cycling races, and three running races. The organization employs approximately 30 people and plays a significant role in boosting the economy of the Dalarna region of Sweden, especially during the weeklong cross-country ski racing event held every March.
The Challenge
Vasaloppet, a nonprofit organization that manages and operates an annual 90-km cross-country ski race in Sweden, wanted to expand its business and increase its positive impact on the region. The organization aimed to boost the popularity of its summer cycling and running races and its off-season recreation opportunities. They wanted to provide athletes and spectators with a range of interactive features to enhance their experience and engagement with the events.
The Solution
To achieve its goal, Vasaloppet developed a new mobile app using IBM MobileFirst Platform Foundation and IBM Interactive Experience. The app provides athletes and spectators with a range of interactive features. Users can enter demographic and historical information to estimate their completion times, compare their off-season performance to real race results, or navigate to past results to assess the competition. On race day, the app provides location-specific information about local amenities and real-time race updates. This solution is expected to increase tourism to the Dalarna region throughout the year and help boost the popularity of its cycling and running events.
Operational Impact
  • The solution improves existing racers’ experience by giving them unprecedented access to comprehensive result information.
  • The solution helps increase awareness of the Vasaloppet brand, bringing a race that has its roots in the 16th century firmly into the 21st century.
