About The Customer
Utz Quality Foods is the largest privately held and family-managed salty snack company in the U.S. Founded in 1921, the company is based in Hanover, PA, and operates 10 facilities in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Alabama. Utz has grown through a strategy of organic growth, mergers, and acquisitions, becoming one of the largest snack food powerhouses. The company's brands include Utz®, Bachman®, Good Health®, Snikiddy®, Golden Flake®, Zapp’s® and “Dirty”® Potato Chips. As the company grows, so does its need for business intelligence (BI) and analytics.
The Challenge
Utz Quality Foods, a large privately held snack food company, was facing the challenge of creating an enterprise-wide analytics strategy to support its rapid growth through both organic growth and mergers and acquisitions. The company needed to deploy real-time analytics to speed up decision-making and empower business units to take control of their data. They also needed to unlock clean, high-quality information via self-service dashboards, InfoApps, and other analytics assets. The company was looking for a way to increase efficiency and better compete with larger snack food companies.
The Solution
Utz Quality Foods partnered with Information Builders to enhance its critical business processes and deliver fresh, high-quality data to workers in manufacturing, purchasing, logistics, human resources, and other parts of the organization. The company used Information Builders’ WebFOCUS, InfoAssist+, and iWay technologies for this purpose. For example, Utz used the WebFOCUS BI and analytics platform to create an InfoApp™ called SnackBoard that provides fast and clear answers to business questions related to sales. Regional managers use this self-service BI environment to make daily decisions about inventory, sales, and trends. Utz is also creating similar InfoApps™ for finance, manufacturing, and executive-level decision-making. The company uses iWay Service Manager to integrate data into data warehouses for operational reporting, as well as to create an enterprise service bus for transmitting data and process flows.
Operational Impact
  • Enterprise-wide access to vital information increases efficiency and helps Utz better compete with larger snack food companies.
  • Many operational business units at Utz benefit from advanced analytical capabilities that increase efficiency, boost the effectiveness of sales promotions, and improve customer relationships.
  • The Logistics Team uses WebFOCUS to track products and monitor shipments.
  • The Purchasing Team depends on the software to analyze inventory and forecast revenue so they can determine when to place orders and how much inventory to keep on hand to meet anticipated demand from current and future promotions.
  • Utz is expanding its DSD network to include third-party distributors and independent operators. These business partners access current inventory information as they service their customers.
