Manfrotto Group is a world leader in the creation, production, and distribution of professional support systems for the photography, video, and entertainment industries. As part of the Vitec Group, Manfrotto Group employs over 600 people in Italy and several locations worldwide. With headquarters in Bassano del Grappa, in the province of Vicenza, the group has facilities in Feltre and Marcon, as well as distribution centers in France, Germany, Israel, Italy, and the United States. The company markets four separate brands of equipment that are leaders in the photography, video, broadcast, film, and live entertainment markets, contributing to a total consolidated sales figure of more than $140 million in 2006.
The Challenge
Manfrotto Group, a global leader in the creation, production, and distribution of professional support systems for the photography, video, and entertainment industries, faced a significant challenge in securing VPN access to their centralized data centers. The company's information systems were consolidated in Bassano del Grappa, where the main data center was equipped with approximately 50 servers. This architecture allowed all the business units within each brand to connect to a centralized data center to access administrative and financial systems. However, as the company grew, so did the demand for secure remote access to corporate resources. More than 25% of the employees in Italy were considered mobile users, and the trend was quickly catching on throughout the branch offices. The company needed a solution that could be centrally managed out of the data center while securing the new access to information and corporate resources for which users were asking.
The Solution
Check Point UTM-1 Edge appliances provided the solution to Manfrotto Group's business expansion requirements. The appliances could be quickly deployed and scale for as many VPN connections as needed. The UTM-1 Edge appliances turned out to be a winning strategy, especially from a management perspective. With SmartCenter, all the VPNs and the functionality of every UTM-1 Edge appliance could be administered from the data center. The unified security architecture allowed for a consistent policy across all the endpoints on the network. The centralized architecture of the security administration allowed the company to expand quickly with no errors or downtime due to misconfiguration. The UTM-1 Edge appliances also provided an integrated firewall and antivirus combined with intrusion protection, ensuring the same level of security at the branch offices as at the data center.
