The Challenge
US Signal, the largest privately held data center services provider in the Midwest, faced significant security challenges in protecting its customers' networks. The company serves seven of the top ten healthcare systems in Michigan, the largest mental health provider in western Michigan, numerous managed service providers (MSPs), and various financial institutions, which necessitates robust security measures. The company had to deal with a range of threats, including phishing and the increasing pace of vulnerability discovery. The company also had to ensure compliance with various security frameworks and regulations, including SOC 2, PCI, and HIPAA. The vulnerability management software US Signal was using previously was not cloud-friendly and required a lot of on-premises infrastructure, making it challenging to manage their vulnerability assessment program.
The Solution
US Signal replaced its existing vulnerability management platform with Rapid7 InsightVM and added the Rapid7 Managed Detection and Response (MDR) service, which includes access to InsightIDR, Rapid7’s SIEM/XDR. The Rapid7 platform offered a more cloud-friendly approach, improving US Signal's ability to assess all of its systems. The Rapid7 Insight Agent was particularly beneficial, allowing assessments in a more cloud-friendly and remote worker-friendly way. The deployment of MDR was straightforward, with the Insight Agent providing excellent telemetry. Rapid7 InsightVM also enabled different teams within US Signal to get directly involved in using the platform for vulnerability management. The company plans to focus on automation using Rapid7 InsightConnect in the coming year.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Rapid7's solutions has brought significant operational benefits to US Signal. The Rapid7 MDR service has provided more accurate alerts than the company's previous SIEM. The company has been able to engage all teams in vulnerability management, with at least five different teams having responsibility for their own systems. The weekly vulnerability management meeting has been instrumental in reviewing upcoming issues, critical vulnerabilities, and the overall status for each team. The Rapid7 MDR SOC has provided 24/7 monitoring, reducing alert volume and false-positive alerts. The user interface for MDR - InsightIDR - has been more user-friendly than the previous SIEM, providing higher quality alerts right at the top of the queue. The company has not had any major security incidents since the implementation of the Rapid7 MDR service.
